Both teams are unbeaten in the Champions League after three games and there's an intriguing subplot, with Sporting manager Ruben Amorim set to join City's fierce rivals Man United in the coming weeks.
- City haven't lost three games in a row for over three years
- City are unbeaten in their last 12 European away games dating back to 2022
- City defeated Sporting 5-0 away in their last meeting
- Sporting have lost three of their four home UCL games vs English teams
- Sporting have scored 35 goals in the league this season
Head To Head
These two teams last played in the 2021/22 Champions League R16, with City crushing Sporting 5-0 in Lisbon.
Sporting CP Form
After surging to the Liga Portugal title last season, Sporting have gone to another level this term and are one of the form teams in Europe.
Indeed, Sporting have won all 10 of their league games this season, banging in 35 goals and conceding just three, while they are unbeaten in the Champions League, defeating Lille and Sturm Graz either side of a draw on the road against PSV.
Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres has been on fire, scoring 24 goals in 20 games for club and country this term, including 16 in 10 league outings and four in Sporting's most-recent 5-1 thrashing of Estrela this past weekend.
However, it remains to be seen if Sporting can maintain this level after Amorim announced he was set to join Manchester United in the international break, with some players - including Gyokeres - expressing disappointment at his decision.
Manchester City Form
City tend to start seasons a bit off the pace and that's been no different this term, but this time, they're also dealing with a growing casualty ward.
Ballon d'Or winner Rodri is out for the season with a knee injury, while the likes of Ruben Dias, John Stones, Oscar Bobb and Jack Grealish are also definitely out of this clash. Kevin De Bruyne and Savinho are also in doubt.
As a result, City are staring down the barrel of suffering three straight defeats for the first time since August 2021 - and even those came across two different seasons.
City went down 2-1 against Tottenham in the EFL Cup last week - a result they won't care too much about - but another 2-1 defeat against Bournemouth in the league certainly wasn't in their plans.
Verdict
City are struggling at the moment, but I think they could be inspired for this clash, with Amorim joining their main rivals in the coming weeks.
City also haven't lost three games on the trot for over three years, so this is by far Sporting's biggest test of the season. City's odds are solid in the H2H market, but Sporting can get on the scoresheet in defeat.
