Spain vs England Tips

Spain have been brilliant at Euro 2024, with their 2-1 triumph over France in the semi-finals further testament to the nation being well and truly back in the world of football.

England secured a stunning 2-1 comeback win over the Netherlands in their semi-final as Ollie Watkins scored a last-minute winner.

Head To Head

England have won four of their last 10 against Spain, with the latter winning five times and one match ending as a draw.

Spain's Route To The Final

  • Spain 3 Croatia 0
  • Spain 1 Italy 0
  • Albania 0 Spain 1
  • Spain 4 Georgia 1
  • Spain 2 Germany 1
  • Spain 2 France 1

Spain Form

Spain have been brilliant at Euro 2024, and few would argue that they deserve their place in the showpiece event this week.

Their crushing 3-0 win over Croatia in game one proved to be a warning of things to come, with the Spanish winning each of their six matches. Five games have been won in 90 minutes, while they needed extra-time to finally beat hosts Germany.

Their clash with France put their attacking qualities on full-show, with the first-half particularly entertaining. Lamine Yamal scored a stunning opener to get Spain level before Dani Olmo scored the winner in the 25th minute. Ultimately, France couldn't carve out the opening they so desperately needed, with this testament to Spain's defence.

Spain will be wary of England's attacking qualities, but they know they can unpick the lock if they use the ball well. However, while I do predict that they will score, can this side deal with the pressure of playing in a major final?

England's Route To The Final

  • Serbia 0 England 1
  • Denmark 1 England 1
  • England 0 Slovenia 0
  • England 2 Slovakia 1
  • England 1 Switzerland 1 (England Won 5-3 On Penalties)
  • Netherlands 1 England 2

England Form

England have been steadily growing in stature since the knockout stages, although the players and fans will know that they were mere seconds away from slipping out of the competition before Jude Bellingham's stunning overhead kick restored parity against Slovakia in the Round of 16.

Since then, England have won on penalties against Switzerland before deservedly beating the Netherlands in a match they dominated. While it was Harry Kane that scored a hugely important penalty to get England level in the game, it was substitute Ollie Watkins that stunned the Dutch as his turn and shot from a tight angle flew into the bottom corner as the clock turned red.

England have so often been a side that shrink away in the latter-stages of games, but they have taken events in their stride recently. Late levellers against Slovakia and Switzerland were followed by an even later winner against a Dutch side that have excelled in recent matches. England seem to have built something very special, with a side that never says never.

I believe this match will see Harry Kane once again step up in the big occasion, while I also predict a real scrap of a match at times. Spain have been very combative and have the most yellows of any side at the tournament. With the Spanish likely to keep the ball, tactical fouls will work their way into the game, while Spain will likely look to cut England down if they try to break quickly.

Verdict

I am backing over 4.5 cards in a game that could get scrappy quickly as both sides battle to ensure they do not lose.

Alongside this, I believe that Harry Kane will get his chance in the game, while I am backing England to win inside 90 minutes despite failing to keep a clean sheet.
