Italy vs England Tips

Italy and England are incredibly hard to beat with a close match expected in the Euro 2020 final. I am expecting extra time with a penalty shootout a real possibility.

  • Italy are undefeated in their last 33 matches (all competitions).
  • Italy have won 12 of their last 14 matches (all competitions).
  • Italy have won to nil in 11 of their last 14 matches (all competitions).
  • Italy have won by 2+ goals in 10 of their last 14 matches (all competitions).
  • Italy are undefeated in 12 of their last 14 matches against England (all competitions).
  • Italy have drawn 3 of their last 5 matches against England (all competitions).
  • England are undefeated in their last 12 matches (all competitions).
  • England have won 10 of their last 12 matches (all competitions).
  • England have kept 10 clean sheets in their last 12 matches (all competitions).

Head to Head

Italy have an 11-8 advantage against England with 8 draws in 27 matches.

They last met in a friendly in 2018 that ended in a 1-1 draw.

Italy beat England 1-0 at Euro 1980, 2-1 at the 1990 World Cup, on penalties at Euro 2012 and 2-1 at the 2014 World Cup.

Italy Form

Italy are undefeated in their last 33 matches, winning 12 of their last 14 and winning to nil in 11 of their last 14 matches. They are playing with plenty of confidence.

The Azzurri began Euro 2020 with a 3-0 win against Turkey. They beat Switzerland 3-0 and beat Wales 1-0 in their final group game.

Roberto Mancini’s side beat Austria 2-1 in extra time in the Round of 16. Federico Chiesa and Matteo Pessina scored and they held on.

Italy beat Belgium 2-1 in the quarter-finals. Nicolò Barella opened the scoring, Lorenzo Insigne made it 2-0 and they defended well under pressure.

Italy went all the way against Spain in the semi-finals. Federico Chiesa opened the scoring, they conceded 10 minutes from time in a 1-1 draw after extra time.

Andrea Belotti, Leonardo Bonucci, Federico Bernardeschi and Jorginho converted their spot kicks and Gianluigi Donnarumma made one crucial save.

Italy Squad & Team News

Goalkeepers: Gianluigi Donnarumma, Alex Meret, Salvatore Sirigu
Defenders: Francesco Acerbi, Alessandro Bastoni, Leonardo Bonucci, Giorgio Chiellini, Giovanni Di Lorenzo, Emerson Palmieri, Alessandro Florenzi, Leonardo Spinazzola, Rafael Toloi
Midfielders: Nicolo Barella, Bryan Cristante, Jorginho, Manuel Locatelli, Lorenzo Pellegrini, Stefano Sensi, Marco Verratti
Attackers: Andrea Belotti, Domenico Berardi, Federico Bernardeschi, Federico Chiesa, Ciro Immobile, Lorenzo Insigne, Giacomo Raspadori

Midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini remains injured but Roberto Mancini has plenty of options. Jorginho, Marco Verratti and Nicolo Barella the preferred three.

Experienced campaigners Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci are a formidable central defensive duo.

Full back Alessandro Florenzi is doubtful and left back Leonardo Spinazzola is injured. Emerson should stay ahead of Rafael Toloi at left back.

Federico Chiesa picked up a knock but will hope to keep his spot. Domenico Berardi, Andrea Belotti and Federico Bernardeschi are other attacking options.

England Form

England are undefeated in their last 12 matches. They have won 10 of those and kept 10 clean sheets.

Gareth Southgate’s side started Euro 2020 with a 1-0 win against Croatia, Raheem Sterling on target. They were poor in a 0-0 draw against Scotland before Sterling scored in a 1-0 win against Czech Republic.

The Three Lions beat Germany 2-0 in the Round of 16. Sterling opened the scoring once again with Harry Kane on target. They beat Ukraine 4-0 with Kane scoring twice and goals to Harry Maguire and Jordan Henderson.

England got past Denmark in the semi-finals, winning 2-1 in extra time. They fell behind but Bukayo Saka and Sterling instigated an own goal before Sterling won a penalty in extra time, Kane seeing his spot kick saved before burying the rebound.

England Squad & Team News

Goalkeepers: Aaron Ramsdale, Sam Johnstone, Jordan Pickford
Defenders: Ben Chilwell, Conor Coady, Reece James, Harry Maguire, Tyrone Mings, Luke Shaw, John Stones, Kieran Trippier, Kyle Walker, Ben White
Midfielders: Jude Bellingham, Jordan Henderson, Mason Mount, Kalvin Phillips, Declan Rice
Forwards: Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka, Jadon Sancho, Raheem Sterling

England boss Gareth Southgate should stick to the back four system employed against Ukraine and Denmark.

Bukayo Saka, Jack Grealish and Jadon Sancho and Phil Foden compete for a spot on the wing.

Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane are indispensable to Southgate.

The match is being played at Wembley Stadium in London at 5.00am AEDT on Monday, July 12.

Italy and England face their toughest tests of the tournament. I think the Euro 2020 final is headed to extra time at Wembley.

From there, I expect Italy to get it done in extra time or penalties.
