Tottenham vs Southampton Tips

Tottenham welcome Southampton to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday as the pair get their new Premier League season underway. Tottenham will have hopes of fighting at the top of the league this season, while Southampton will want to secure their Premier League status before then pushing up the table.

Spurs failed to beat Southampton last year, losing 3-2 in London and drawing 1-1 when they made the trip to face the Saints. Before this, Tottenham beat their opponents in both matches in the 2020/21 season, including a 5-2 hammering on the road.

Spurs were in excellent form as the season drew to a close, with Tottenham securing a place in the Champions League after finishing in fourth. However, it was too little too late for Spurs as their return to form still saw them finish over 30 points short of the top two.

This year, Antonio Conte's side need to find a way to remain consistent across their campaign. Importantly, they need to ensure that one poor performance does not lead to multiple defeats. Last season they were the victims of poor runs of form that derailed their campaign as they looked to close the gap on Manchester City and Liverpool.

This year, Spurs will need to juggle the Champions League and the Premier League, with the London side likely to have to rotate their squad intelligently. With Tottenham now back to where they feel they belong, they will be desperate to start the new season with a win.

Southampton Form

It was a disappointing season for Southampton last time out, with the side limping to Premier League safety after winning just nine of their 38 games. Usually, the Saints are a fairly safe bet to clinch survival, but they took securing their survival very deep in the season.

Last year, they managed to score a rather paltry 43 goals, while they conceded 67 times, 14 more than relegated Burnley. Things need to change if they are to build upon their survival, with some believing that the Saints will be in and around the relegation zone once again.
