Western United vs Sydney FC Tips

Western United find themselves in a bit of a slump to start the season. They face a Sydney who have been tough to beat on the road and love playing in Melbourne.

  • Western United have seen Over 2.5 goals in 3 of their last 4 matches (A-League).

  • Sydney FC have seen Over 2.5 goals in 3 of their last 5 matches (all competitions).
  • Sydney FC have won 3 of their last 5 matches (all competitions).
  • Sydney FC have won 5 of their last 6 matches at AAMI Park (A-League).

Head to Head

These two sides have only met on the two occasions, with both Western United and Sydney FC picking up a win each.

It was Western United who came away with a 2-1 victory in their most recent meeting late last season. With the scores tied at 1-1, midfielder Steven Lustica scored an emphatic 90th minute winner to seal an upset win.

Western United Form

Western United have had an ambivalent few weeks in the A-League.

They picked up their first win of the new season in style, defeating Perth Glory in a thrilling 5-4 contest at home. Substitute Dylan Pierias starred with a brace, while Lustica popped up once again to score the winning goal in the 84th minute.

A goalless draw against Melbourne Victory followed with Western captain Alessandro Diamanti striking the crossbar twice. His side also had two goals ruled out by the VAR either side of half-time.

Their most recent match saw them go down 3-2 to Central Coast. After leading 2-1 at the break, Western failed to hang on and paid the price by conceding twice in four minutes late in the match.

The loss sees Western slip to tenth on the table with just the one win from their first five.

Western United Team News

Winger Max Burgess returned for the first time in 2021 after he was granted extended leave. He came off the bench in last week’s loss and will be in the mix to start this week.

Fullback Josh Risdon is still expected to be out for another few months as he nurses a broken tibia, while midfielder Seb Pasquali will also miss with injury.

Sydney FC Form

The Sky Blues have returned to winning ways in 2021.

After a shock 2-0 defeat at home to the Mariners, Sydney have hit back with consecutive wins.

Sydney took full advantage of Macarthur captain Mark Milligan’s first half sending off to pile on the goals late and defeat the Bulls 3-0 away from home. Academy graduate Patrick Wood netted a brace, while veteran Milos Ninkovic also scored.

A double from forward Kosta Barbarouses then saw the Sky Blues defeat Wellington Phoenix 2-1 at home, which sees them rise to fifth on the table.

Sydney FC Team News

Left back Michael Zullo is a chance to return from a calf injury, though would most likely be via the bench with the in-form Joel King currently occupying his position.

Midfielder Harry Van der Saag will miss another week with an ankle injury. Brazilian striker Bobo is still working towards match fitness and will most likely be left out of the squad this week.

Sydney FC certainly enjoy playing in Melbourne with the Sky Blues winning in six of their last seven visits to the city.

Verdict

Western United pose one of the most dangerous front thirds in the league but have struggled to pick up points this season. They host a Sydney FC side who have a dominant record when playing in Melbourne. I’m backing BTTS and over 2.5 goals, with value on a Sydney win.
