With the score deadlocked at 1-1, City striker Jamie Maclaren popped up with an 84th minute winner to steal the points for his side in their last meeting.
Western United Form
Western United have hit a roadblock and are struggling to find the back of the net.
The green-and-black suffered consecutive defeats after going down 1-0 at home against Western Sydney, before they were outclassed in a 2-0 defeat to Sydney FC.
Mark Rudan’s side did momentarily rectify this with a 1-0 win against Brisbane Roar. Winger Dylan Pierias headed home a second half winner after an assist from captain Alessandro Diamanti.
Though this was short-lived as Western would once again fail interstate as they were defeated 2-1 by Macarthur. Despite opening the scoring through Pierias, they were unable to stop the fast-finishing Bulls.
Western United Team News
Right-back Josh Risdon is still out with a fractured tibia, while midfielder Seb Pasquali will also remain on the sidelines with a hip injury.
Melbourne City Form
Melbourne City have shot into title contention after six consecutive victories.
A 10 minute burst saw City pile on three first half goals against Macarthur, as they ran away with a 3-0 win. Maclaren netted a brace before ex-Bolton winger Craig Noone iced the game with the side’s third in the 35th minute.
Maclaren again opened the scoring the following week against the Central Coast, with full-back Nathaniel Atkinson converting his first for the season in a 2-0 win.
City then made another big statement in their 4-1 win over Western Sydney. Noone starred with a brace, while forwards Maclaren and Andrew Nabbout scored as well.
The one conceded against the Wanderers was the first goal the defence had let slip past them in five matches.
Melbourne City Team News
Aiden O’Neill remains City’s only injury, with the ex-Burnley midfielder sidelined with a back issue.
Maclaren has taken his game to a new level this season with the Socceroo netting 12 goals in his last 10 matches.
