Western United vs Adelaide United Tips

These sides love to score, especially when playing each other. I'm backing BTTS Yes and for this match to see over 3.5 goals.

  • Adelaide United have seen BTTS in their last 4 matches
  • Western United have scored in 5 of their last 6 matches
  • The last 2 matches between these sides have seen over 3.5 goals

Western United Form & Team News

Western United enjoyed a strong finish to their inaugural campaign. They won four of their last six matches to qualify for the finals. Western United became one of the league’s most entertaining teams, with three of their last four league matches seeing over 2.5 goals.

Their finals series was not as high scoring. Western United capped off their finals debut with a 1-0 win over Brisbane Roar in the Elimination final. An Alessandro Diamanti wonder goal in the 21st minute was enough to see them through to the semi-finals.

It was here where Western United met their match. A 2-0 loss to Melbourne City saw Mark Rudan’s side eliminated and kept goalless for the first time in five matches.

Western United added the missing piece to their side just days before their first match – signing ex-Espanyol midfielder Victor Sanchez. The 33-year-old made over 240 appearances for Espanyol and will slot in alongside captain Alessandro Diamanti in the midfield.

Western United also boosted their attacking arsenal by signing winger Lachie Wales from Melbourne City.

Despite still being contracted, forward Max Burgess has been pushing for a move in the off-season. Burgess was one of the side’s brightest players last season scoring six goals in 24 appearances.

Adelaide United Form & Team News

Three draws in their last four matches saw Adelaide United finish seventh and narrowly miss out on finals football.

After a 5-3 win over Perth Glory, the Reds struggled to acquire maximum points in their next two fixtures.

Despite scoring first against league leaders Sydney FC courtesy of a goal from defender Jordan Elsey, Adelaide were unable to keep out the fast-finishing Sydney.

Their final match of the season ended in a thrilling 2-2 against Melbourne City. This time the Reds were left ruing a poor first half after they went into the break 2-0 down.

A spirited second half fightback saw Adelaide score twice in 13 minutes with forwards Kristian Opseth and Ben Halloran scoring, but ultimately proved too little too late.

Like Western United, Adelaide United have also picked up an Espanyol great in the off-season. Midfielder Javi Lopez joins the club after a 15 year career in Spain and could feature as early as Round 1.

The Reds also added firepower up front through signing former Socceroos forward Tomi Juric, who returns to the A-League after spells in Bulgaria and Switzerland.

The club have also sought to fix its defensive issues in its signing of former Schalke defender George Timotheou.

Adelaide’s biggest loss in the off-season was in the form of creative midfielder James Troisi who forced a move to the Western Sydney Wanderers.

Injury wise, exciting young forward Al-Hassan Toure is still out after breaking his foot late last season.

Head to Head

These two sides have only met twice, with both recording a win each. Their first meeting last season ended 4-3 to Adelaide United. There were four goals scored inside the opening 20 minutes with the Reds jumping out to an early 3-1 lead. Western United would claw their way back and find themselves at 3-3. But a late goal from Adelaide forward Nathan Konstandopoulos would see Adelaide steal the points.

Their second meeting was another high-scoring affair. Western United stormed home to record a 5-1 win in Adelaide. Striker Besart Berisha was on song with a brace, with club marquee Alessandro Diamanti also scored.
