Wellington Phoenix vs Sydney FC Tips

The Champions come in mostly unchanged from last season. They meet a fresh-faced Wellington outfit who will take time to gel. I’m backing Sydney to win.

  • Wellington have lost 3 of their last 5 matches (A-League).
  • Sydney FC have won 4 of their last 5 against the Phoenix (A-League).

Head to Head

These two sides have met 43 times. Sydney FC holdsa 24-14 record, with only 5 draws being played.

The Sky Blues came out on top in a 3-1 win the last time these two sides met. Despite Wellington opening the scoring through midfielder Reno Piscopo, Sydney flexed their muscle in the second half.

Former Reading forward Adam Le Fondre equalised in the 76th minute before striker Trent Buhargiar added a late brace.

Wellington Phoenix Form

Wellington were hit hardest by the pandemic late last season. The Phoenix were forced to relocate permanently to Sydney and their form suffered.

The New Zealand based side failed to win in their final five matches and saw their campaign come to an end in the first round of the finals.

After a 3-0 loss to the Newcastle Jets to see out the regular season, the Phoenix were knocked out of the finals by Perth Glory in a 1-0 loss.

Despite finishing third, Wellington failed to make it past the first week of the finals.

Phoenix Team News

Like late last season, Wellington will play its home matches out of WIN Stadium in Sydney.

Their season ahead has been all the more difficult following the departure of several key players. Former England international and club captain Steven Taylor left the club after two seasons, while forward Gary Hooper made a move to India.

The Phoenix have replaced Hooper up front with Israeli international Tomer Hemed – joining from Charlton Athletic.

The club has also looked locally for talent, signing New Zealand international Clayton Lewis as well as former Brisbane Roar winger Mirza Muratovic.

On the injury front, the club will be without midfielder Reno Piscopo who will miss with a calf injury.

Sydney FC Form

Sydney FC ended their previous A-League campaign on a high lifting the Championship for the second straight season.

A Rhyan Grant goal in extra-time of their Grand Final meeting against Melbourne City proved the difference and sealed the side’s fifth championship.

Since then, Sydney FC have spent their time playing in the AFC Champions League. Their dominance in the league failed to translate to a successful Champions League campaign, with Sydney finishing bottom of the group.

Despite not advancing from the group stage, Sydney did record an emphatic 4-0 win over Shanghai SIPG. Forward Trent Buhargiar starred with a brace, with defender Alex Wilkinson and midfielder Luke Brattan also scoring.

Sydney Team News

Sydney FC opted for a quieter transfer period this season. The Sky Blues did not bring anyone for the upcoming season but did lose forward Adam Le Fondre.

The former Reading forward made a move to India after being Sydney’s leading goal scorer for two consecutive seasons.

While Sydney comes into this match without any injuries the last few weeks have been awkward for the club. After spending two weeks in quarantine upon their return, the players have not been allowed to return to their homes after a recent coronavirus outbreak in the city.

Verdict

Sydney FC are the champions for a reason and have not made too many changes to their squad. Their record against Wellington speaks for itself, so I’m backing them to notch up another win.
