Wellington Phoenix vs Central Coast Mariners Tips & Predictions

Wellington Phoenix and Central Coast Mariners will each be aiming to build on last-start wins and start pushing towards the top six when they square off on Saturday at Sky Stadium.

It's a tough match to call, with both teams level on 17 points after 13 games. However, I think the value is with Wellington here. Phoenix are actually unbeaten in 18 of their last 20 home games against Australian clubs after 90 minutes, while they come into this showdown following a brilliant 2-1 upset victory over Macarthur. Wellington also demolished Central Coast 3-0 in Gosford back in Round 4.

The Mariners have improved somewhat, but they've conceded exactly four goals in their last three defeats and are still unlikely to break into the top six and give themselves a chance to defend their premiership. Backing Wellington to win, with both teams finding the back of the net, which has occurred in Central Coast's last six outings.

  • Phoenix beat Mariners 3-0 earlier this season
  • Phoenix are unbeaten in 18 of their last 20 home games vs Australian clubs inside 90 minutes
  • BTTS has landed in the last six Mariners' games
  • Phoenix have seen BTTS land in six of their last eight games

Head To Head

Phoenix are unbeaten in five of the last six meetings between the teams, including that aforementioned crushing 3-0 victory earlier this season.

Wellington Phoenix Form

It hasn't been a great season for Phoenix, but they've showcased some promising signs over the last couple of weeks and will be determined to secure all three points in what is a crunch game here if they want to keep pace with the top six.

After going on a run of five defeats from six games, Phoenix stopped the rut with a gritty 0-0 stalemate at home against Sydney FC.

Taking confidence from that performance, Wellington went on the road and produced a fantastic performance to stun in-form Macarthur FC, with the Kiwi club coming from behind to prevail 2-1 as Kosta Barbarouses' penalty in the second-half proved the difference.

Alex Rufer missed the win over Macarthur with illness and could be a chance to return for this clash.

Central Coast Mariners Form

It was always going to be difficult for a club like the Mariners to back up their stunning two Grand Final victories on the bounce and that's proven the case so far this term.

It's not been a bad season from Central Coast all things considered, but they do look a class below the best teams at the moment and they'd need significant improvement and go on a big run to feature in the finals again.

In saying that, the Mariners are just four points adrift of the top six and bagging three points across the ditch in this encounter would be a huge confidence boost.

Central Coast are in decent form as well, winning two of their last three games - including a most-recent 3-1 triumph over the Wanderers on the road, with Alou Kuol, Ryan Edmundson and Mikael Doka getting on the scoresheet.

Central Coast Mariners Team News

Still a few players in the casualty ward for the Mariners, with Brad Tapp, Lucas Mauragis, Nicholas Duarte and Miguel di Pizio sidelined.

Verdict

Huge opportunity for both teams to inch closer to the top six if they can bag all three points here.

Although Phoenix aren't having the best season, they remain tough to beat at home and I'm not sure the Mariners have the quality right now.

The value lies with Wellington winning at home, while both teams are expected to find the back of the net.
