Sydney FC vs Western Sydney Wanderers Tips

Consecutive match cancellations for Sydney FC means this will be their first match in two weeks. While the Wanderers may not be as rusty, they have seen BTTS in their opening two matches. I’m tipping BTTS with this one to end all-square.

  • Sydney FC have seen BTTS in 3 of their last 5 matches against the Wanderers (A-League).
  • Western Sydney are unbeaten in their last 4 matches against Sydney FC (A-League).
  • Western Sydney have seen BTTS in 6 of their last 8 matches (A-League).

Head to Head

These two sides have met 25 times with Sydney FC holding a 12-6 record, while seven draws have been played.

Their last meeting ended in a 1-1 draw last year. Adam Le Fondre opened the scoring for the Sky Blues in the 35th minute before Wanderers forward Kwame Yeboah equalised late in the second half.

Sydney FC Form

The Sky Blues came into this A-League season with plenty of confidence.

A 4-0 win over Shanghai SIPG and a 1-1 draw with Yokohama F Marinos in the AFC Champions League gave Sydney FC the perfect preparation ahead of their domestic title defence.

Sydney have only played the one match so far, with their two most recent matches being postponed due to the coronavirus. The match they did play ended in their favour with the Sky Blues defeating Wellington Phoenix 2-1.

Debutant Calem Nieuwenhof introduced himself in style, opening the scoring with an incredible strike from distance. Midfielder Luke Brattan then sealed the deal in the 55th minute with an equally impressive set-piece goal.

Sydney FC Team News

Midfielder Paulo Retre is doubtful for this contest as he continues to recover from a groin injury.

All eyes will be on whether Brazilian striker Bobo will make his return, after the club lured him back after two seasons abroad. Bobo scored 42 goals in 57 matches for Sydney FC, though the club have not made any indication that the Brazilian will play.

Western Sydney Wanderers Form

The Wanderers’ start to the new A-League season did not go to plan as they went down 1-0 to Macarthur at home.

But Western Sydney very quickly put this hiccup behind them as they went on to defeat the Newcastle Jets 2-1 away from home.

Defender Ziggy Gordon opened the scoring with a thumping header in the seventh minute, before full-back Tate Russell doubled the side’s lead just after half-time.

Western Sydney Team News

The Wanderers come into this match with a fully fit line-up.

Ex-Cardiff City midfielder Jordon Mutch is unavailable, with the new signing still in quarantine for another week.

What is the Sydney FC vs Western Sydney Wanderers best bet?

Both teams to score is the best bet in the Sydney derby.

While the Wanderers will back themselves against a Sydney outfit that hasn’t played in two weeks, Western Sydney have looked shaky at the back. They have conceded in their last two matches and have seen BTTS in 4 of their last 5. I’m tipping BTTS with this one ending in a draw.
