Both sides have looked shaky at the back, with City’s defensive options also looking quite bleak at the moment. While Newcastle have looked promising, they seem to lack conviction up front.

Head to Head
Melbourne City have a 16-12 advantage over the Jets with only the four draws played across their 32 encounters.
It was the Jets who got the upper hand with a 2-1 win the last time these two sides met. Midfielder Steven Ugarkovic scored the winning goal in the 78th minute after City midfielder Florin Berenguer had equalised eight minutes prior.
Newcastle Jets Form
The Jets have enjoyed a steady improve after losing their opening four matches.
After three straight 2-1 losses, Newcastle broke their drought with a 2-1 win over the Wellington Phoenix at home. Striker Valentino Yuel opened the scoring in the eighth minute, before veteran forward Roy O’Donovan sealed the win with his 51st minute strike.
The Jets backed this up with a 1-1 draw against Western Sydney with O’Donovan getting on the scoresheet for the second straight week.
Jets Team News
Defender Ali Abbas is still two weeks away as he recovers from a hamstring injury.
Midfielder Ben Kantarovski will also remain on the sidelines with the 29-year-old still dealing with a calf issue.
Melbourne City Form
Melbourne City’s season has taken an interesting turn over the last few weeks.
They picked up their second win of the season in a thrilling encounter with Western United. Jamie Maclaren’s 85th minute winner saw City record a dramatic 2-1 win at home.
A 3-1 loss at home to Perth was followed by a 3-2 defeat to Central Coast, with City surrendering a 2-0 lead against the Mariners as well. Injuries and suspensions have made life difficult for City who will be eager to bounce back against the bottom placed Jets.
City Team News
Three City players have been sent off so far this season, with defender Kerrin Stokes the latest to receive a suspension. The 19-year-old will miss the Jets clash, which could see fullback Nathaniel Atkinson move into more of a central role.
Portuguese defender Nuno Reis is available as well, though is yet to make his debut after just finishing his quarantine period.
Central midfielder Rostyn Griffiths has not travelled to Newcastle as he continues to recover from injury.
Striker Andrew Nabbout has also remained in Melbourne, with the Socceroo still recovering from a hamstring injury suffered in the opening round.
