Newcastle Jets vs Macarthur FC Tips & Predictions

Macarthur FC will have revenge on their minds when they travel to McDonald Jones Stadium to face the Newcastle Jets to conclude A-League Round 13 action on Sunday.

A brief lapse of concentration cost Macarthur in their Round 2 loss to the Jets and I don't see it happening again. Macarthur have won three of their last five games, while Newcastle's only win against a team above them on the ladder was that aforementioned Round 2 triumph. The Bulls are good value on the road, with both teams expected to find the back of the net.

  • Macarthur have won three of their last five games
  • Newcastle have lost six of their 10 games this season
  • Newcastle have failed to win their last six A-League home games
  • Macarthur have won their last three A-League away games
  • BTTS has landed in the last five meetings
  • Macarthur have seen BTTS in four of their last five games
  • Jed Drew has scored five goals this season

Head To Head

These two teams have built up quite the rivalry so far this campaign, with Macarthur coming from behind to knock the Jets out of the Australia Cup (before going on to win the trophy), while Rob Stanton's team scored twice in a five-minute second-half ambush (along with saving a 90th minute penalty) to emerge 2-1 winners in Round 2 this A-League season.

Newcastle Jets Form

The Jets are enjoying their best period of the season heading into this clash, going unbeaten in three of their last four games.

It all started with a thumping 4-0 victory on the road against Perth Glory, but after the bye, Newcastle couldn't back it up in a 2-1 defeat across the ditch against Wellington Phoenix.

Although a 2-2 draw against Sydney FC sounds good on paper, the Jets blew a 2-0 lead with 15 minutes remaining to share the spoils before edging out a 1-0 victory against rock-bottom Brisbane Roar mid-week, with returning striker Lachie Rose scoring the winner after some brilliant lead-up work from Wellissol and Thomas Aquilina.

Newcastle have hauled themselves to within eight points of the top six with two games in hand, but they need to keep winning in order to have a realistic shot at the finals.

Newcastle Jets Team News

Rose and Wellissol could be a chance to come into the starting line-up after the pair came off the bench and heavily influenced the outcome in the win over Brisbane on Tuesday night.

Macarthur FC Form

It's been a wildly inconsistent season for Macarthur, who come into Round 13 sitting in fifth spot on the ladder with five wins, three draws and four defeats.

You really don't know what you're going to get from Macarthur on any given day, but they've proven they have the firepower to beat anyone, with the likes of Jed Drew and Marin Jakolis (each with five goals & assists so far this season), along with Valere Germain forming an explosive front three.

Germain put Macarthur ahead in their most-recent outing against Adelaide on Monday night, but once again (not to dissimilar to their home loss to the Jets) they suffered a concentration lapse and conceded two late goals to fall 2-1.

That defeat snapped a two-game winning run for Macarthur, with the team scoring three goals each in victories over the Wanderers and Perth.

Tomislav Uskok and Liam Rose are back in the squad this week, but still no sign of injured Socceroos winger Chris Ikonomidis, who is yet to feature for his new club this season.

Verdict

Think the Jets come crashing back down to earth in this game - two of their three wins this season have been over Perth and Brisbane, while their other over Macarthur was extremely fortuitous.

Macarthur's firepower in the final third should prove too strong, with Jed Drew good value to open the scoring as he searches for his sixth goal of the campaign.
