Melbourne Victory vs Wellington Phoenix Tips

Wellington have drawn in their last four visits to Melbourne to face the Victory, who have looked uninspiring going forward. I’m backing Under 2.5 goals with this one ending in a draw.

  • Melbourne Victory are unbeaten in 3 of their last 4 matches at AAMI Park (A-League).
  • Melbourne Victory have seen under 2.5 goals in 4 of their last 6 matches (A-League).
  • Melbourne Victory are unbeaten in their last 6 home matches against Wellington (A-League).
  • Wellington Phoenix have drawn their last 4 away matches against Melbourne Victory (A-League).

Head to Head

Melbourne Victory have a 20-9 advantage in the head-to-head against Wellington with 11 draws in 40 encounters.

After their first two meetings ended in draws last season, Wellington picked up a 3-0 win in the third.

In what was Wellington’s last match at home since the pandemic, all three of the side’s strikers were on target. Captain Ulises Davila opened the scoring in the third minute before forwards David Ball and Gary Hooper added their names to the scoresheet.

Melbourne Victory Form

Melbourne Victory are in dire need of points after losing their last three matches.

After suffering their worst defeat since 2016 in a 5-2 loss to Brisbane, the Victory failed to respond and fell short in a 2-0 loss against Western Sydney.

A facial injury to striker Marco Rojas exacerbated the club’s woes ahead of their match at home against the Newcastle Jets.

While Rojas missed with injury ex-Wigan winger Callum McManaman returned, though not even he could inspire the side in their 1-0 loss. Grant Brebner's side have now failed to score in three of their last four matches.

The Victory currently sit bottom with just the one win from their opening seven matches - their worst ever start to a season.

Melbourne Victory Team News

Rojas is expected to miss another week after he received several facial stitches after receiving a high boot against the Wanderers.

Roux will also be sidelined due to concussion, while Traore remains doubtful after limping off late in the loss against the Jets.

Centre-back Nick Ansell also sustained an injury in the last match and will not be risked due to the tight turnaround.

Socceroo Robbie Kruse played the full 90 minutes against the Jets for the first time this season, while McManaman was taken off after 60 in his first match in a month.

Wellington Phoenix Form

While the Phoenix have been competitive this season, their relocation to Sydney has seen them struggle to win games.

For the second time this season Wellington went down 2-1 to Sydney FC, with captain Ulises Davila scoring a consolation goal late. A trip to Gosford then saw the Phoenix go down 2-0 to the Central Coast – two weeks after they had upset the Mariners to pick up their first win of the season.

Unlike their last two matches, the Phoenix did not leave their last match empty handed as they held Western Sydney to a 2-2 draw.

Wellington forward Mirza Muratovic opened the scoring in the ninth minute, while midfielder Louis Fenton’s 79th minute goal saw the spoils shared after the Wanderers took the lead.

Wellington Phoenix Team News

Wellington’s season has been made all the more difficult by a plethora of injuries.

Midfielder Cameron Devlin returned from injury off the bench in the draw against the Wanderers and will be in contention to start.

A knee injury will see defender Luke DeVere sidelined for up to 12 weeks, with the 31-year-old set to undergo surgery.

Striker David Ball will miss another match due to suspension while fellow forwards Tomer Hemed and Jaushua Sotirio will miss with respective hamstring and knee injuries.
