Melbourne Victory vs Sydney FC Tips & Predictions

Another instalment of the Big Blue promises to deliver more fireworks as Melbourne Victory and Sydney FC square off to launch A-League Round 16 action on Friday night at AAMI Park.

Victory come into this encounter as favourites with the bookies, but I can't justify backing them at all. Indeed, Victory are winless in their last six games since Patrick Kisnorbo announced his shock depature to be an assistant coach in the J-League. Additionally, these two teams squared off not long ago on December 28 and Sydney came away with a statement 3-0 triumph. Unbeaten in six of their last seven games, Sydney are backed in the Double Chance market, while a draw offers value in the H2H. Joe Lolley leads the goal-scoring charts with eight this term and is always a solid shout to find the back of the net first.

  • Victory are winless in their last six games
  • Sydney are unbeaten in six of their last seven games
  • Sydney beat Victory 3-0 last month
  • Victory have drawn three of their last six games
  • Joe Lolley has scored eight goals this season (most in the A-League)

Head To Head

As mentioned, Sydney crushed Victory 3-0 when the two teams met back in Round 10. Their previous meeting came this time last year, with the match ending in a 1-1 draw.

Melbourne Victory Form

Victory got off to a great start this season, but all of that good work has come undone over the last month or so, with the club dropping out of the top six.

Of course, Victory's dip in form has coincided with Kisborbo leaving the club, with Arthur Diles stepping in and struggling to lift the side.

Victory have drawn three of their last six games, but head into this encounter having suffered back-to-back defeats.

The 4-3 defeat to Western United was shocking, with Victory conceding two goals in injury time, while they also went down 3-2 against league leaders Adelaide last weekend.

Melbourne Victory Team News

Victory had a full squad to choose from in the defeat to Adelaide and aren't likely to make any changes for this clash.

Sydney FC Form

Sydney have leapfrogged Victory on the ladder in recent weeks, going unbeaten in six of their last seven games to surge from outside the top six and into fifth position heading into Round 16.

However, there's still been some shaky performances from the Sky Blues - they were down 2-0 against the lowly Newcastle Jets with 15 minutes remaining before salvaging a 2-2 draw, while they also didn't offer much in a 0-0 stalemate across the ditch against Wellington.

The worst was yet to come though, with Sydney somehow losing 4-3 at home against Brisbane Roar, who were winless heading into last weekend's clash. Ufuk Talay would have been fuming with that result and will demand an immediate response in the Big Blue.

Sydney FC Team News

No new injury concerns for Sydney, with Brazilian winger Douglas Costa still a few weeks away from returning.

Verdict

Should be another fiery Big Blue showdown, but as mentioned, I can't have Victory as favourites here.

Clearly Kisnorbo's departure has affected them greatly, while Sydney will be desperate to bounce back after last week's shock loss to Brisbane, which snapped a six-game unbeaten run.

Backing the Sky Blues in the double chance market, with a draw solid value in the H2H.
