Central Coast Mariners Form
Last season’s wooden spooners continue to defy the odds in 2021.
The Mariners upset Sydney FC 2-0 in an impressive display away from home. Striker Alou Kuol converted the winner in the 74th minute after Sydney defender Ben Warland’s own goal gave Central Coast the lead.
Central Coast got a taste of reality the following week. They went down 2-1 at home to Wellington Phoenix but bounced back in the best possible way.
After trailing 2-0 at home to Melbourne City, the Mariners staged a late comeback to record an emphatic 3-2 win. Second half goals to midfielder Jaden Casella, captain Matt Simon and ex-Roma youth product Daniel De Silva helped Central Coast to a famous win.
Mariners Team News
Midfielder Oliver Bozanic was rested after receiving treatment on his shoulder and should return for this clash.
The same cannot be said for midfielder Daniel Bouman who will be sidelined for the second straight match with a hamstring injury.
Western United Form
Western United responded to their 2-1 loss to Melbourne City by defeating Perth Glory in a 5-4 thriller at home. Substitute Dylan Pierias scored a four minute brace off the bench, while midfielder Steven Lustica netted the winning goal in the 85th minute.
This goalscoring frenzy was short-lived as they were held to a scoreless draw against Melbourne Victory. Western finished the match the stronger of the two and even had two goals controversially disallowed by the VAR.
Last season’s leading goalscorer Besart Berisha is yet to score this season. Western United have been forced to find alternative routes to goal, which may explain the side’s lack of goals this season.
Western United Team News
Right-back Josh Risdon is still out with a broken tibia, while midfielder Seb Pasquali is still around six weeks away as he recovers from a hip injury.
Forward Max Burgess has returned to Victoria after taking extended leave, though is not yet ready to return to the line-up.
