Central Coast Mariners vs Newcastle Jets Predictions

Both sides have had tumultuous off-seasons and failed to bring in many high-profile recruits. I’m tipping a draw and for BTTS.

  • The Central Coast Mariners have drawn 2 of their last 3 matches (A-League).
  • These two sides have drawn 2 of their last 3 meetings (A-League).
  • Newcastle Jets are unbeaten in their last 5 matches (A-League).

Head to Head

These two sides have met 45 times. The Newcastle Jets hold a 16-13 with both sides also playing out 16 draws.

The last meeting between the two sides ended in a 0-0 draw, a result which saw the Jets miss out on the finals.

Central Coast Mariners Form

After enduring 11 consecutive losses, the Mariners finished their disastrous season on somewhat of a high.

Central Coast played spoiler for both Newcastle and the Western Sydney Wanderers by ending their respective chances of making the finals. A 0-0 draw with the Jets was followed by a 1-1 result against the Wanderers with midfielder Milan Duric scoring in the 59th minute.

The Mariners would then carry this form into their final match against Melbourne Victory, whom they would defeat 3-2.

Trailing 2-1 with five minutes to play, fresh faced forward Dylan Ruiz Diaz made a name for himself by equalising in the 85th minute. The 19-year-old would then score the winning goal just four minutes later, giving the fans something to smile about after another hellish season.

Central Coast Mariners Team News

As is the case most seasons with the Mariners, they were forced to start from scratch with the club experiencing a mass exodus.

Several first team players such as defender Ziggy Gordon and midfielders Milan Duric, Sam Silvera and Tommy Oar all departed the club.

Despite the club facing ownership issues they have managed to fill these holes with overseas talent. Costa Rican international and striker Marco Urena joins the club, as does 23-year-old Serbian midfielder Stefan Jankovic.

The club has lured former Socceroo midfielder Oliver Bozanic back to the club after a brief stint with Hearts in Scotland.

Newcastle Jets Form

The arrival of head coach Carl Robinson saw Newcastle go from no hopers to finals contenders late last season. The Jets won six of their last ten matches and only suffered the one defeat to narrowly miss out on a finals berth.

A goalless draw with the Mariners was followed by a shock 1-0 win against Western United with forward Roy O’Donovan scoring in the 29th minute.

The Jets would continue this form into the final round as they defeated the Wellington Phoenix 3-0 to see off their 2019/20 campaign.

Striker Nick Fitzgerald opened the scoring early before his fellow attackers Bernie Ibini and Jason Hoffman scored goals of their own in the second half.

Newcastle Jets Team News

The Jets come into the new season without an owner nor a head coach, with the Western Sydney Wanderers poaching Carl Robinson.

The side will instead be led out by Craig Deans who will take over in the interim.

Such off-field issues resulted in the side losing a core group of players, with forward Bernie Ibini walking out and joining Robinson at the Wanderers. Goalkeeper Glen Moss retired at the end of last season, while loanee defender James Donachie returned to India.

The club failed to bring in any foreign signings, instead opting for players available locally. Forwards Valentino Yuel and Ramy Najjarine join from Western United and Melbourne City respectively in the hope for more game time.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Jack Duncan returns for a third stint at the club – joining from Saudi Arabia for the upcoming season.
