Rebels vs Crusaders Tips
To make the final the Crusaders will need a big win here. The Highlanders are above them in second place on points difference. A bonus point win may not be enough if the Highlanders match that result.
I expect the Crusaders to go full throttle here and should be far too good for the Rebels. A win by more than 27 points is tipped for the Crusaders.
- Rebels have lost their last 4 matches.
- Rebels have conceded 163 points in their last 4 matches.
- Crusaders have covered the -27 handicap in 2 of their last 4 matches.
- Crusaders have scored an average of 62 points per game in their last 4 matches against the Rebels.
- Crusaders have covered the -27 handicap in 3 of their last 4 matches against the Rebels.
- Crusaders have won 6 of their last 8 matches against the Rebels.
Head to Head
Crusaders have won six of their last eight matches against the Rebels. The last time they met the Crusaders beat the Rebels 66-0 in the 2019 Super Rugby competition.
The Rebels have yet to gain a point in their four Super Rugby trans-Tasman matches. The only thing keeping them off the bottom of the table in a slightly better points difference than the Waratahs.
It began with a humiliating 50-3 home defeat to the Blues before losing 35-13 at the Hurricanes the following week. In round three the Rebels were slightly better but still lost 42-27 against the Highlanders in Dunedin.
Last week was perhaps the Rebels best performance thus far. They went down 36-26 at the Chiefs but were in the match for large periods.
Rebels Team News
Dane Haylett-Petty and Reece Hodge have not featured in Super Rugby trans-Tasman due to injury and that will continue this weekend. Matt Toomua is also missing with injury which makes it three internationals out of the backline.
The Crusaders come into this match unbeaten but third on the table. They are a point behind the Blues and behind the Highlanders on points difference.
This week the Saders’ will need to win big and get a bonus point unless one of the two above them slip up. While unbeaten the Crusaders have been far from their best in the opening four rounds.
On the opening weekend they were fortunate to beat the Brumbies 31-29 at home. They then destroyed the Reds 63-28 away before winning 54-28 at the Waratahs.
Those two bonus point wins put the Crusaders back on track but they let that momentum slip last weekend. Despite a 29-21 victory against the Western Force, the Crusaders failed to get the bonus point against a side most other teams have.
Crusaders Team News
Ethan Blackadder returns to the starting lineup at flank to replace Cullen Grace who misses out with a hip injury.
There are a few other changes to the Crusaders side from last week. Hooker Codie Taylor is out of the squad due to rest protocol. George Bower comes in at prop for Tamaiti Williams.
Sam Whitelock also returns to the side in place of Mitch Dunshea who will feature off the bench. The first choice half-back combination starts this weekend in Mitchell Drummond and Richie Mo’unga.
