Hurricanes vs Western Force Tips

The Hurricanes have started Super Rugby trans-Tasman with two good victories. The Western Force have however been the most competitive Australian franchise over the last two weeks so I’m backing the visitors to get within 22 points of the Hurricanes.

  • Hurricanes have won 10 of their last 11 matches against the Western Force.
  • Hurricanes have won their last 3 Super Rugby matches.
  • Western Force have won 3 of their last 6 matches.
  • Western Force have not lost by more than 12 points in their last 6 matches.

Head to Head

The Hurricanes have a dominant record against the Western Force with 10 wins and one defeat in 11 matches. They have not met since 2017 but the Hurricanes have won their last nine matches against the Force by an average of 18 points.

Hurricanes Form

The Hurricanes have found some form in Super Rugby trans-Tasman with two wins in their opening two fixtures. Both have come by comfortable margins.

In week one the Hurricanes traveled to Sydney where they defeated the Waratahs 64-48. Conceding 48 points was  a concern but they rectified that last week, beating the Rebels 35-13 at home.

It was a far more complete performance by the Canes who had a disappointing Super Rugby Aotearoa. Currently the Wellington-based outfit find themselves second on the table and with three matches to play, will look to go top this weekend.

Hurricanes Team News

Head coach, Jason Holland has shuffled the pack a bit with the Hurricanes, making a few changes to the side.

The big news is the earlier than expected return of All Black international flank, Ardie Savea. He will start from the bench.

Captain Dane Coles has been given the week off which sees Asafo Aumua take his place at hooker. Isaia Walker-Leawere starts at lock while utility forward Gareth Evans starts at flank after coming off the bench last week.

Ruben Love is not yet fit so Orbyn Leger will remain at flyhalf. Scrumhalf Luck Campbell is fit and returns to start.

Western Force Form

The Western Force had a fantastic second half of Super Rugby AU which saw them sneak into the playoff spot. They have however struggled, like all their Australian counterparts, against New Zealand opposition.

In round one the Force impressed against the Super Rugby Aotearoa runners-up, the Chiefs. A late score was by the Force was just not enough as they went down 20-19. The Highlanders were the visitors in round two.

It was another solid display by the Western Force but their lack of attacking intent showed. The Perth-based outfit went down 25-15. They will take heart from the fact that over the first two rounds they have been the best performing Australian side.

Western Force Team News

The Western Force have made four changes to their side for this weekend. Jeremy Thrush returns from injury at lock to face his former side.

Hooker Andrew Ready, flyhalf Domingo Miotti and winger Toni Pulu also all return to the starting lineup.
