  • Brumbies on to cover handicap
  • Rebels have struggled on the road in 2020

The Brumbies entertain the Rebels on Saturday 4 July at the GIO Stadium. This is the first clash for the sides in the new Super Rugby AU competition and I'm backing the Brumbies to start with a bang. The odds are not yet available but I'm banking on a 10 point handicap.

Brumbies Form & Team News

The Brumbies made an excellent start to the 2020 Super Rugby campaign before it was voided due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The side from Canberra won five of their six matches, with their final match before the break ending in a fine 47-14 victory over rivals the Waratahs at GIO Stadium on 15 March.

The Brumbies also beat the Sunwolves and Chiefs away from home, and the Rebels and Reds at home. Their only defeat of 2020 was at the hands of the Highlanders 22-23 at GIO Stadium.

Lock Cadeyrn Neville is injured and will likely miss the clash, while lock Blake Enever has left the Brumbies for the Reds.

Rebels Form & Team News

The Rebels will have mixed emotions from their six matches in Super Rugby earlier in the year. While they won half of them, they will feel they should have put more pressure on in matches where they lost.

The last time they took to the field was on 7 March 2020 against the Lions at AAMI Park in Melbourne. It was an decent performance as they ran out 37-17 winners but it was against a depleted Lions outfit..

The previous week, the Rebels traveled to New Zealand where they beat the Highlanders 28-22 at Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin.

Defeats to the Sharks at home and Brumbies and Sunwolves away will still be on their mind - especially the loss in Japan.

The Rebels will set up camp in Canberra two weeks ahead of the clash, as a spike in coronavirus cases in Victoria is a worry.

Brumbies vs Rebels Head to Head

The Brumbies hold a 13-7 advantage over the Rebels in their last 20 Super Rugby encounters.

The last time the sides met was on 7 February 2020 in Super Rugby. The Brumbies ran out comfortable 39-26 winners at the GIO Stadium in Canberra.

The average score in Super Rugby matches between the sides in Canberra is Brumbies 31-17 Rebels.

Brumbies vs Rebels Match Up

Both the Brumbies and Rebels are fine attacking sides but it is the Brumbies forwards that give them the edge. The hosts should get the upper hand at set pieces which will allow their back-line to flourish.
