Blues vs Western Force Tips

The Blues just need a win to make the Super Rugby trans-Tasman playoffs. They should however be far too good for a Western Force side that have lost their last four matches. I am backing the Blues to cover the -24 handicap.

  • Blues have covered the -24 handicap in 3 of their last 4 matches.
  • Blues have won 7 of their last 8 matches against the Western Force (1 draw).
  • Blues have won their last 5 matches.
  • Blues have won 9 of their last 10 matches at home.
  • Blues have scored 167 points in their last 4 matches whilst conceding just 58.
  • Western Force have lost their last 10 away matches in New Zealand.
  • Western Force have scored the least points (61) in Super Rugby trans-Tasman.

Head to Head

The Blues are unbeaten against the Western Force in their last eight matches. They have won seven and drawn one. The last time the Western Force managed a win over the Blues was in 2008.

Blues Form

The Blues are top of the Super Rugby trans-Tasman table with four wins from four. They have won with a bonus point in three of their four matches.

Bar a catastrophic result against the Western Force, the Blues should feature in the final next week.

After a disappointing Super Rugby Aotearoa campaign, the Blues stormed into the trans-Tasman with a 50-3 win against the Rebels. That was swiftly followed with another bonus point 48-21 win over the Waratahs at home.

In round three the Blues were magnificent as they swept the Brumbies aside 38-10 on home soil. Last week was the first match in which the Auckland-based outfit did not pick up a bonus point, beating the Reds 31-24 away.

Blues Team News

Hoskins Sotutu returns to the starting lineup this weekend which sees Akira Ioane drop to the bench.

Ofa Tuungafasi is sidelined with a new injury so fellow international, Nepo Laulala will start at prop. There are no other changes to the Blues lineup.

Western Force Form

The Western Force are winless over the course of their four Super Rugby trans-Tasman matches. They have picked up one bonus point defeat which places them eighth on the table.

Defensively the Force have been reasonably good but it is on attack where concerns have been raised. They have scored the fewest points (61) in the first four weeks.

A narrow 20-19 home defeat against the Chiefs was followed by a 25-15 loss at home to the Highlanders. It was two gutsy performances by the Perth-based outfit against teams that on paper are far superior.

The Force suffered a heavy 43-6 defeat at the Hurricanes in round three but bounced back well to narrowly lose 29-21 to the Crusaders away last week. The hosts did play a weakened side which helped the Force’s cause.

Western Force Team News

Experienced Irish fullback Rob Kearney missed last week’s clash against the Crusaders after failing an HIA test. He returns via the bench this weekend.

Ian Prior will start at scrumhalf for the injured Tomas Cubelli while Jordan Olowofela returns to the side for the injured Toni Pulu.
