Super Rugby Final Preview

The Blues are unbeaten this season at home but the Chiefs did hand the Hurricanes their first home defeat of the season last week in the semi-final. Can they do it again?

While the Chiefs should be competitive for most of the game, over 80 minutes at home I am backing the Blues to cover.

  • Blues have won their last 4 home matches against the Chiefs.
  • Blues have won 7 of their last 10 matches against the Chiefs.
  • Blues have won their last 9 matches at home.
  • Blues have won 14 of their last 16 matches.
  • Blues covered the -6 handicap in their last match against the Chiefs.
  • Blues have covered the -6 handicap in 4 of their last 5 matches.
  • Chiefs have won 11 of their last 16 matches.

Head to Head

The Blues have won seven of their last 10 encounters against the Chiefs. When they met earlier this season, the Blues won 31-17 and have won their last four at Eden Park against the Hamilton side.

Blues Form

The Blues finished the regular season in second place, a point behind the Hurricanes. However, with the Chiefs upsetting the odds last weekend, the Blues have a home Super Rugby final this Saturday.

The Auckland side have only lost twice this season, away to the Hurricanes and Crusaders. At home their record has been perfect with nine wins from nine.

Last weekend, in the semi-final, the Blues were too good at home for the Brumbies, winning the match 34-20. In the quarter-final a week earlier, the Blues were 36-5 winners at home against Fijian Drua.

Blues Team News

(1-15): Ofa Tu'ungafasi, Ricky Riccitelli, Marcel Renata, Patrick Tuipulotu (c), Sam Darry, Akira Ioane, Dalton Papali'i, Hoskins Sotutu, Finlay Christie, Harry Plummer, Caleb Clarke, AJ Lam, Rieko Ioane, Mark Tele'a, Stephen Perofeta

Subs: Kurt Eklund, Joshua Fusitu'a, Angus Ta'avao, Josh Beehre, Adrian Choat, Taufa Funaki, Bryce Heem, Cole Forbes

Patrick Tuipulotu makes his return from injury after missing the semi-final last weekend.

Chiefs Form

The Chiefs make an unexpected return to the Super Rugby final after ending as runners-up last season. They were favourites going into hat final, they are not this time around.

Over the course of the season the Chiefs have been quite inconsistent, winning nine of their 14 round robin games. They finished fourth on the table but beat the Reds 43-21 at home in the quarter-final.

The Hurricanes were clear favourites last weekend, but the Chiefs produced what was arguably their best performance of the season, winning the game 30-19 in Wellington.

The Hamilton-based outfit will need a repeat performance in terms of quality to get the win in Auckland. The question is whether they can produce that performance on successive Saturdays.

Chiefs Team News

(1-15): Aidan Ross, Tyrone Thompson, George Dyer, Jimmy Tupou, Tupou Vaa'i, Samipeni Finau, Luke Jacobson (c), Wallace Sititi, Cortez Ratima, Damian McKenzie, Etene Nanai Seturo, Rameka Poihipi, Anton Lienert-Brown, Emoni Narawa, Shaun Stevenson

Subs: Bradley Slater, Jared Proffit, Reuben O'Neill, Manaaki Selby-Rickit, Simon Parker, Xavier Roe, Quinn Tupaea, Daniel Rona

The Chiefs have lost All Black hooker, Samisoni Taukei’aho to a leg injury. The return of Shaun Stevenson at fullback is however a positive.

The Blues are backed to win Super Rugby 2024 by covering the -6 handicap. There is also value in the total points market with over 53 points offering over evens.
