England vs Fiji Tips

England snuck through the group stage with a perfect record as they found a way to beat an inspired Samoa side 18-17.

Fiji were left red-faced in their final group game as they were beaten 24-23 by Portugal in one of the matches of the tournament so far.

England Form

England have struggled to consistently play well at the World Cup, with a range of performances seeing them to four wins. Their victory over Argentina came via the boot of George Ford, while they struggled for coherence and incision against Japan despite winning 34-12.

They then ran in a raft of tries, hammering Chile 71-0 before they had the mother of all scares in an 18-17 win over Samoa. Some tried to blame the two-week gap between their win over Chile and their clash with Samoa for how badly they played against the latter, but it is likely a case of old issues coming back to hurt England.

Any mention of 'old issues' will have England thinking back on their stunning loss to Fiji at Twickenham prior to the World Cup. England were incredibly poor in most areas, and they allowed the Fijians to run straight through them.

England have had issues with teams that want to play running rugby, with the Japanese opening them up at times while Somoa were all over England in their clash. This English side will want to control the game with their kicking, but this will give Fiji a lot of possession. Will Steve Borthwick look to change tactics to clip the wings of the flying Fijians?

Fiji Form

Fiji began the World Cup with one of the greatest losing performances the competition has seen as they battered Wales physically and moved the ball with speed and precision. Ultimately, they were undone by a handling error with the clock in the red, but they could so easily have won that game.

They then went into their clash with Australia as underdogs and knowing they needed a win, and that is exactly what they got. Fiji were brilliant against the Aussies and effectively put one foot in the quarter-finals with that win.

However, since then, Fiji have been poor. Georgia put them under huge pressure and stopped them from playing rugby before they were humiliated in a 24-23 loss to Portugal in their final pool outing. While defeat did not knock them out, it needs to serve a warning that they cannot just turn up, throw the ball around and beat anyone.

Fiji will benefit from coming into this one as the underdogs after struggling to justify the tag of favourites against Georgia and Portugal. If Fiji can play their natural game then they will give England problems. However, if they are inaccurate with ball in hand and infringe then England will enjoy nothing more than trying to pin them in their own 22.

I am backing England to edge to a win in this one, although I think it will be very tight. Borthwick's men struggled last week but found a way to notch victory, with England a good tournament team.

Marcus Smith has been rumorued to have been handed the 15 shirt this week, and if he starts, I believe he will score.
