The 2024 Rugby Championship will see New Zealand, South Africa, Australia and Argentina renew hostilities in the biggest competition in southern hemisphere rugby.
New Zealand are the reigning champions having triumphed in 2023, and the All Blacks are the favourites to defend their crown in 2024, with bet365 pricing them at $1.44 ahead of the competition.
The Rugby Championship Winner | Odds |
---|---|
New Zealand | $1.44 |
South Africa | $3.50 |
Argentina | $13.00 |
Australia | $21.00 |
New Zealand won the Rugby Championship in 2023, with the shortened event due to the Rugby World Cup seeing the All Blacks win all three of their matches. Ahead of the latest iteration of the competition, New Zealand can be backed at $1.44 to defend their crown.
World champions South Africa are available at $3.50, with Argentina ($13.00) and Australia ($21.00) the outsiders.
New Zealand are fancied this year despite having a tough campaign ahead of them. A double header against Argentina at home is immediately followed by trips to face South Africa in Johannesburg and Cape Town in Round 3 and 4 respectively. They then end their campaign with home and away clashes against the Aussies.
For South Africa, this will be a major chance for them to secure only their second Rugby Championship crown, and first since 2019. New Zealand have long dominated the tournament, but the world champions will hope to push the All Blacks close this time.
For Argentina and Australia, it is a tough ask for either of them to get close to winning the competition. Australia finished at the foot of the ladder without a win in 2023, while Argentina won once after beating the Aussies.
Australia may prove an interesting prospect across the tournament. While it would be fanciful to see them as title candidates at this stage, they may have an upset or two in them. Recent wins over Wales (twice) and Georgia means they arrive on a winning run, while coach Joe Schmidt is ensuring they do the simple things well.
Will New Zealand win the Rugby Championship in 2024, or can any of the other three sides end the domination of the All Blacks?
