Wellington vs Waikato Tips

Wellington have been superb this season, winning nine of their 10 games to date but come up against an in-form Waikato side. The visitors have won their last three games which saw them sneak into the quarters.

That said, Wellington should prove too strong on home soil. I can see it being tight for the first 50-60 minutes but I’m backing the defending champions to cover the -9 handicap.

  • Wellington covered the -9 handicap against Waikato in their last meeting.
  • Wellington are the defending NPC champions.
  • Wellington have won 9 of their last 10 matches.
  • Waikato have won their last 3 matches.

Head to Head

Wellington beat Waikato 41-24 away earlier this season.

Wellington Form

Wellington have cruised through this season and finished top of the table. They suffered just one defeat during the regular season, winning their nine other games.

The defending champions finished five points clear of second place which allowed them to rest key players throughout. They will want to defend their title but won’t have it all their own way on Saturday.

In mid-September, Wellington did well do beat Bay of Plenty 26-14 away from home. It was followed by a convincing 26-6 home victory against North Harbour.

Last week saw Wellington suffer their first defeat as they went down 20-18 at home to Hawkes Bay. That result will be of slight concern but will hardly dent the champs confidence.

Wellington Team News

Wellington rested key players in last week’s defeat to Hawkes Bay. They will return to full strength tomorrow.

Waikato Form

Waikato just made it into the playoffs of the NPC this season, finishing eighth overall. They managed five wins and five defeats during the round-robin stage.

While their season looked to be coming to an end when Waikato lost 41-24 at home to Wellington, they bounced back to win their last three games.

Waikato caused two major upsets to secure their place in the quarterfinals. First, they beat Auckland 27-12 before thrashing Otago. Last week they produced a stunning performance to beat Canterbury 37-35 at home.

Considering the form Waikato are in they are likely to remain unchanged.

Verdict

I'm backing Wellington to win by more than nine points.
