Wellington vs Hawkes Bay Tips

Wellington are favourites at home, but Hawkes Bay did win here earlier this season. I do expect the hosts to triumph in a very tight contest. My best bet is for the visitors to get within seven.

  • Wellington have won 10 of their last 11 matches.
  • Wellington are the defending NPC champions.
  • Wellington have failed to win by more than 7 points in their last 2 matches.
  • Hawkes Bay won their last match against Wellington.

Head to Head

Over the last seven matches between these sides, each have won three along with a draw in 2019. Hawkes Bay won 20-18 against Wellington earlier this season.

Wellington Form

Wellington are the defending NPC champions and are looking to defend their crown. They are favourites to do so after winning nine of their 10 round-robin fixtures to top the table by five points.

That said, Wellington only suffered one defeat this entire season and that came against this very opposition on home soil. It is true that the hosts were not at full strength for that game, but it will still be a slight concern for them.

Last week Wellington just managed to do enough in the quarters, beating Waikato 32-28 at home. While they have cruised for most of the season, there have been recent signs of Wellington starting to struggle.

Wellington Team News

Wellington are unlikely to change much from their side last weekend.

Hawkes Bay Form

Hawkes Bay were the only team to triumph away from home in the quarter-final last weekend. They beat Bay of Plenty 38-28 in a superb performance.

Backing that performance up will be key to The Bay who have been a bit inconsistent this year. They finished fifth on the NPC table with seven wins from their 10 matches, but really struggled to pick up bonus points.

However, Hawkes Bay will have plenty of confidence ahead of this fixture. They were the only team to beat Wellington in the round-robin stage, and that happened two weeks ago when they came out as 20-18 winners away from home.

Hawkes Bay Team News

Hawkes Bay may not have finished in the top four, but they are certainly the form team of the tournament. I do not foresee them making any big changes.

Hawkes Bay are backed to get within seven points of Wellington in the semi-final.
