Taranaki vs Canterbury Tips
If their clash earlier this season is anything to go by it should be an absolute cracker. On that occasion, Canterbury won by a point at home, but Taranaki will look to turn the table in front of their home crowd.
I’m backing the hosts to win the semi-final.
- Taranaki have won their last 4 matches.
- Taranaki have won 3 of their last 5 matches against Canterbury.
- Canterbury beat Taranaki by 1 point earlier this season.
Head to Head
Taranaki have won three of their last five against Canterbury. However, it was Canterbury who won 29-28 earlier this season, but that was a home game for the victors.
Taranaki Form
Taranaki enjoyed a fine season, winning seven of their 10 matches in the round robin stage of the 2023 NPC to finish second.
Last week in the quarter-final, Taranaki put in another solid performance to beat Tasman 34-18 on home soil. They seldom looked in trouble throughout the game and will hope for a similar performance once again in front of their home crowd.
Taranaki are now on a four-match winning streak with their last defeat coming at home to Tasman on 10 September. Confidence will be high, but they face high-quality opposition so they will need to be weary.
Taranaki Team News
Once the teams are announced later this week, I expect a similar side to which ran out in the quarter-final.
Canterbury Form
Canterbury have had an up-and-down season thus far but still managed a third-place finish. They won six of their 10 matches but showed plenty of inconsistency throughout.
In early September Canterbury did manage to beat Taranaki 29-28 but that was a home game. In a very tight contest, they just managed to squeeze through.
Last week Canterbury were under pressure in the quarter-final as well, but they held on to beat Auckland 29-24 at home.
Canterbury Team News
There have been no reported injuries yet from the Canterbury camp.
Verdict
Taranaki are backed to win through to the NPC final.
