Highlanders vs Chiefs Betting Tips
The Highlanders meet the Chiefs in the first every Super Rugby Aotearoa match at the Forsyth Barr Stadium. By the time kick off comes it will have been three months since either side played a competitive match due to the Coronavirus pandemic, so I expect it to be scrappy and tight.
The Highlanders were not enjoying Super Rugby in 2020. Injuries and poor form had cost them from the first game of the season. Their last match ended in a 38-13 defeat to the Bulls at Loftus Versfeld but much has changed since then.
Aaron Smith is widely considered the best scrumhalf in the world at the moment but his form was poor before Super Rugby took a break. Should he come to the party this weekend it could be a long day for the Chiefs.
The break from COVID-19 could work in the Highlanders favour. Momentum can swing easily over the course of a month with no games but at the very least I expect a scrappy first game back. And no crowd could be difficult to get used to.
I am backing the Highalnders on the +10 line while victory at home isn’t out of the question.
Chiefs Form & Team News
The Chiefs started the 2020 Super Rugby season on fire but dropped off the pace in the last few weeks before it was suspended. Their last match saw them suffer a 27-24 defeat to the Hurricanes at the FM Stadium.
Two weeks prior to that defeat the Chiefs were stunned by the Brumbies 27-14 in Canberra. The Brumbies fielded a very inexperienced side considering all the injuries they had and certainly were not expected to win.
A comfortable 51-14 win over a weak Waratahs side in Sydney split those defeats. The Chiefs are rightfully favourites for this one but I feel the -10 handicap may be a steep climb for them.
At this point the Chiefs have a clean bill of health so Warren Gatland should have a full squad to pick from. In the week leading up to the match we will take a closer look at the players.
Highlanders vs Chiefs Head to Head
The Chiefs have won three and the Highlanders one of their last five matches. Their last meeting ended 31-31 at the Forsyth Barr Stadium in 2019. History suggests this will be a close match with less than 10 points in it.
Highlanders vs Chiefs Betting Odds
The Highlanders are heavy outsiders to win at $4.20 with the Chiefs priced at $1.25. A draw can be backed at #23.
It is the line is set at 10 points and pays $1.90 for either team to cover it. More markets such as try-scoring markets will be available closer to the time of kick off.
The Highlanders have struggled in 2020 with only one victory and a draw from their opening six Super Rugby fixtures. The key here is that the extra time has given injured players time to recuperate. I expect the Highlanders forwards to perform much better with players returning.
The Chiefs started the season like a house on fire but slowed down in their last three matches. The Chiefs forwards will need to get gain line dominance as well as compete in the set pieces, something they failed miserably at in their last few matches.
