Australia vs Fiji Rugby World Cup Preview, Betting Tips & Best Bets

Australia kicks off its 2019 World Cup campaign against Fiji, with the Wallabies expected to continue their dominance against the island nation.

The Wallabies are expected to win comfortably but will need to watch out for Fiji's dangerous runners out wide, who will look to scocre at every opportunity.

Australia Form & Team News

Australia were horrible in 2018 but their 2019 form has been decent, even outstanding at times with victory over the All Blacks in the Rugby Championship. There are many weaknesses within the Wallaby side but when it comes to the big tournaments they generally perform well.

The Wallabies defeated Samoa at the Western Sydney Stadium 34-15 in their last outing. It was a dominant performance by Australia but they allowed Samoa back into the game with 10 minutes left to play. Fortunately they upped the tempo again and pulled away.

That will be a concern for coach Michael Cheika against a Fijian side who, if they get on a roll, can destroy any side in a matter of minutes. With what could be a wet ball in humid conditions the Australian forwards may have to do a little more work in terms of keeping it tight to avoid giving Fiji turnover and counter-attacking opportunities.

Australia are tipped to cover the -15.5 line at 1.90 as they have done in six of their last seven meetings with Fiji.

Fiji Form & Team News

Fiji head into the 2019 Rugby World Cup with high hopes as many expect them to at least pose a challenge to the top nations in their pool. Their 2019 form has been fine and they come into the showpiece event on the back of three-straight victories.

Their last match ended in a 29-19 victory over Tonga at Eden Park. There was a fair bit of experimentation during the match but Fiji were pretty dominant throughout.

Fiji are not adverse to causing World Cup shocks and this will certainly be a game they target if they are to progress past the pool stage. Broken field play is what the Fijians specialise in and if Australia give them opportunities the two time world champions could find themselves in trouble.

Head coach John McKee has no reported injury problems but the real question is whether they can compete with the top nations in the set pieces. That is where I believe their downfall lies once again.

Fiji are massive underdogs and can be backed at 7.50 to cause a shock. A draw will pay 34.00.

Australia vs Fiji Head to Head

Australia is undeafted Fiji in their last 17 matches, which includes 16 wins.

The last time they met was at AAMI Park in 2017 and Australia were comfortable 34-17 winners.

Australia vs Fiji Match Up

Australia traditionally enjoy an expansive game of rugby with pacey and skillful players in the back-line. This hasn’t changed much because they don’t have the forwards to dominate top opposition, however against Fiji we may see a different plan.

Fiji have always been blessed with skillful players and in broken play are one of the most dangerous teams in world rugby. If they can compete well in the set phases there could be problems on the cards for the Aussies.

Australia vs Fiji Key Statistics

  • Australia has covered the -15.5 handicap in 7 of their last 8 matches against Fiji
  • Australia has covered the -15.5 handicap in 2 of their last 3 matches (all opposition)
  • Australia have not lost to Fiji since 1954 (17 matches)

Verdict

Australia has an exceptional record against Fiji and their World Cup pedigree should see them through this one comfortably.

We're backing the Wallabies to cover the -1.5 handicap at 1.90.
