Lightly raced six-year-old Surprise Baby will miss a 2021 autumn campaign due to an injured hock.
A winner of the Group Two Adelaide Cup (2019) at the end of just his first racing preparation, the son of Shocking caught the eye with a big performance behind Vow And Declare in the 2019 Melbourne Cup, starting as a well supported favourite in the 2020 edition, but could only manage a 13th-place finish.
Paul Preusker Racing released the following statement on February 9 via Facebook:
"Unfortunately Surprise Baby is out of the Autumn Carnival but most importantly we still have our brave warrior," the statement read.
"He has sustained an injury to his hock and further tests are being performed in the next couple of days to ascertain the next steps that will be taken.
"He is comfortable, safe and in good hands at the vet clinic. We thank everyone for their well wishes in advance."
Surprise Baby has accrued just under $1 million in prize money to date with feature wins that include an Adelaide Cup and The Bart Cummings later that year, his last performance before contesting the 2019 Melbourne Cup
