The Darren McAuliffe-trained pair of Gatting and The Velvet King will head to the Victorian stable of Lindsey Smith following the Group Three Strickland Stakes at Belmont Park in Perth this Saturday.

Six-year-old Gatting has already tasted group one success in the east by taking out the Makybe Diva Stakes in 2019 when upsetting Mystic Journey at odds of $101 and the Hard Spun gelding has won more than $2 million in prize money to date.

The Velvet King is a group three winning four-year-old son of Universal Ruler who was one of the favourites in the 2019 Railway Stakes (finished sixth) and this campaign, has strung together three runner-up efforts in a row, all at group three level.

In comparing the two, trainer Darren McAuliffe (when interviewed by The Races WA prior to the running of the 2019 Railway Stakes) said that he's always felt that "The Velvet King is a better horse" than his stable mate in Gatting despite the latter having the stronger resume.
The dual stable operation has netted trainer Lindsey Smith 107 winners at a strike rate of 19% over the last 12 months with 57 of those victories coming in Victoria.
