It was a big Happy Valley Wednesday night for jockey Joao Moreira who bagged five winners on the May 19 Hong Kong program.
Holding a 14-win margin on Zac Purton leading into the meeting, it was the Australian that drew first blood with victory aboard odds-on favourite, Red Majesty in the opener.
Unfortunately for Purton, his night ended there, with the reigning Hong Kong Champion Jockey sidelined for the rest of meeting due to a back injury.
The 'Magic Man' got on the board in the second when steering Nitro Express to victory and the nine-year-old gelding broke a massive drought in the process, having last saluted all the way back in January, 2017.
Moreira, who is aiming for a fourth Hong Kong Champion Jockey title following a hat-trick of successes from 2015 to 2017, brought up win number four on Savvy Kingman (Race 6) and a third consecutive triumph, following victories on Universal Go Go (Race 4) and Rhapsody (Race 5).
He secured his fifth victory for the program on the Tony Cruz-trained Transcendent (Race 8) and in a bid for a sixth, had no luck on the short favourite, Superbella (Race 9), who was caught three-wide for that 1800m journey, tiring late as a result.
At 128 wins so far this season, Moreira now holds a lead of 18 over Zac Purton, who edged out Moreira last season to claim a fourth Hong Kong Champion Jockey Premiership.
Purton's first Hong Kong Jockey title back in 2014 when ending the the long streak of Douglas Whyte, who won 13 consecutive titles.
