Doomben hosted a fantastic nine race card on Saturday highlighted by Jonker thrashing his opposition in the Listed Keith Noud.

The track was rated a Good 4 and played well, with a strong advantage to horses on the speed.

Race One

Conexy (Second): This Chris Waller-trained two-year-old was truckloaded in betting on debut but failed to secure the win, running on well into second behind Rhapsody Rose.

After beginning well from barrier five, Luke Dittman settled the two-year-old colt by Nicconi behind the speed off the fence and despite what looked to disappointing on face value, Conexy’s effort deserves much more credit than first given.

Unfortunately for Dittman, he was forced to make his run aboard Conexy from before the turn after the horse in front failed to provide him with a drag into the race, a tactic we later found out to be near impossible given how heavily the track played towards leaders.

Whether Conexy continues his preparation in Queensland or returns to Sydney, he  will only improve under the tutelage of Chris Waller and is a horse to follow.

Race Four

Beltaria (Second): Sent around at massive odds for John Symons & Sheila Laxon, the three-year-old by Bel Esprit produced a massive turn around in form after being gelded prior to this run.

Starting at $41, Beltaria really disappointed in his first-up performance at Ipswich, defeated by Hard Labour by over nine-lengths, however, the worst sight for connections was watching him fail to let down anytime throughout the straight.

Following connection's decision to geld the horse, Saturday was Beltaria's first performance two stones lighter and it was a much more improved effort, charging through the line in the concluding stages.

Despite seeing little luck throughout the run in transit, Beltaria’s first run as a gelding was much improved and although he is still a maiden, he will be shedding that tag very soon.

Race Five

Petunia (Fourth): The Kelly Schweida-trained Petunia was only first-up on Saturday, and produced an outstanding performance in a clear indication she is primed for her best campaign yet.

After stepping out over the mile last preparation where she was only nailed late by Miss Cabaret, the three-year-old by Sebring was given a quiet ride at the rear of the field by Jim Byrne on Saturday, charging home to finish fourth in a hot race.

With the winner (Dusty Tycoon) and second place horse (Plutocrat) both boasting black-type form from their juvenile seasons, it was going to be a fantastic test for Petunia who until her final run last preparation was running around at midweek Ipswich meetings.

Set to only improve over further ground, Petunia thrives behind hot tempo's and returned in outstanding fashion on Saturday.
Race Eight

Baller (Third): A horse which once showed Group 1 promise as a youngster with Anthony Cummings, he was arguably the watch of the day stepping out first-up at Doomben and didn’t disappoint.

Although he didn’t get the win in his first run under Chris Waller, it was a massive performance from back in the field with the race’s last 600m stopping the clock at 33.65 seconds, and his no doubt much quicker than that.

It was a fantastic measuring stick performance for the five-year-old High Chapparel gelding with Boomtown Lass and Niedorp both boasting some fantastic Queensland Listed and black-type form leading into the Summer Carnival.

Coming from the Chris Waller yard where horses usually improve the deeper they progress into their campaigns, Baller is certainly a horse to follow.
