The 2021 Caulfield Cup Nominations have been released with 170 horses in contention to win the word's richest 2400m handicap.
2020 Caulfield Cup winner Verry Elleegant heads the entries while the likes of Incentivise, three-time Derby winner Explosive Jack and Victoria Derby winner Johnny Get Angry are other notable horses nominated for the $5M event.
As for the internationals, there were only 15 horses nominated across all three spring majors, so we are not expecting this year's Caulfield Cup to have the international depth that we are used to seeing.
Connections of 2020 Melbourne Cup winner Twilight Payment have said that if he were to come back to Australia, that this race would be his main target.
A horse with a similar profile to 2020 Caulfield Cup runner-up Anthony Van Dyck, Lone Eagle, has been nominated for the race, while the European Godolphin team have not nominated one horse which is a first for many years.
Racing Victoria's Greg Carpenter says that the team are very pleased with the nominations for the Caulfield Cup with the limited international horses nominated still being of high quality, while out local hopes add just as much depth to the event.
“We’re very pleased with the nominations received today across all the feature races and whilst the international contingent is down on quantity as expected, the nominations from abroad remain high on quality and their journey in the weeks and months ahead will create plenty of interest," Carpenter Said.
“The challenges presented by the COVID pandemic both internationally and domestically in terms of travel cannot be underestimated and in setting a new global safety benchmark for the Spring Racing Carnival additional challenges have emerged, but we make no apology for that."
