Off a run of 11 straight defeats heading into the last race at Pakenham on Thursday night (most by long margins), it's fair to say the long price available for ten-year-old Ultimate Shock was a correct reflection of his form but it mattered not, with the veteran turning things around in style with a half-length victory at a monster price ($185 Top Tote).
Trained by Simone Walker and ridden by Jade Darose, who from barrier eight, had the gelding placed three-wide but relaxed on a modest tempo, he hit the front in the last 200m and denied the late challenge of race favourite - Gutsy.
Speaking to Racing.com post-race was Jade Darose, who was understandably surprised with the result.
"I managed to get on him because he is a bit quirky and does quite a few naughty things, but today he bounced and put himself on the speed," Darose said.
"He shocked me because I didn't think he'd be as good as these but at the 200m, he just left them hanging.
"He was flying and travelled so well, but was still waiting for them to come 150m out, but was so tough today."
The February 4 success made it victory number four overall for the son of Falkirk, an ex-Anthony Cummings runner who won his first two career starts and following a lay-off of more than three years, resumed proceedings for trainer Simone Walker in April, 2019.
