Who wins Gold for Australia at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games
The summer Olympic Games are upon us and Australia will once again be in the mix for plenty of Gold Medals. The talent in the Aussie camp is widespread over a huge variety of sports and our athletes are not only in Paris to participate but we could even see a record-haul of medals with more golds than ever before.
Swimming
All things start in the pool for Australia as they always do at the Olympic Games and there is no bigger chance than Ariane Titmus who is chasing back-to-back Olympic golds in the 200m and 400m freestyle. Titmus was impressive at the olympic trials and was not far off her record times so there is expectation she will be not only after the top-step of the podium but also a couple of new world records.
Kaylee McKeown has been the fastest in 2024 in the 100m backstroke and the 200m individual medley. She will have tough competition with American Regan Smith, who broke her world record in the 100m backstroke at the U.S swim trials setting up a real heated meeting.
Sam Short is the best chance for multiple gold medals on the men’s side. Don’t let his name fool you, Short is at his best in the longer distances winning gold 400m freestyle, silver 800m freestyle and bronze in the 1500m freestyle and will be going out for more gold in Paris.
Sailing
Staying on the water but this time on it, Matt Wearn will be chasing gold in successive Olympics in the ILCA7 (Laser) sailing class. Wearn took gold in Tokyo in 2020 and backed that up with a couple of world titles in his belt heading into Paris in 2024.
The 29-year-old will also bring in winning form from the Olympic test event.
Track Cycling
The Aussie men’s track team is where the best chance lies on the track. Matt Richardson is a two-time Commonwealth Games sprint gold medallist and will be in the mix for the individual events, however, teaming up again with Matthew Glaetzer and Leigh Hoffman who he won the 2022 UCI Track Cycling World Championships at the same venue in Paris will bring fond memories as the team look to pip the Netherlands for gold.
Men’s Field Hockey
The Kookaburras were heartbroken in Tokyo, losing the final to Belgium in a penalty shootout 3-2 after the final was locked at 1-1, coming away as silver medalists which is a bitter sweet achievement.
Led by Aran Zalewski (captain), James Collins, Jake Harvie and Tom Wickham the Australians will be out to repeat the success they had in the 2004 olympics where they won gold, beating the Netherlands 2-1 in extra time.
Australia have drawn a tough group after qualifying by winning the FIH Pro League, they will face Belgium, India, Ireland and rivals New Zealand.
Men's Basketball
The Boomers come into the tournament after a very successful warm up of international friendlies before heading to Paris. Led by new Chicago Bulls guard Josh Giddey and veteran Patty Mills, the Aussies had wins against Serbia, France and Puerto Rico while putting up a spirited comeback against the stacked USA team in Abu Dhabi, losing to a Lebron James and his men by just 6 points.
The Australians have a tough path, needing to get through Fiba World number one ranked team Spain, then taking on NBA stacked Canada, along with Giannis Antetokounmpo and Greece. If the Boomers can get out of their group then they are as good of a shot as any to get past the “Dream Team” of USA.
Verdict
Australia's best chances are as always in the pool but look for the green and gold to stand on top in a variety of sports at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
