Iga Swiatek vs Anna Karolina Schmiedlova Tips
Iga Swiatek suffered one of the most disappointing defeats of her career in the Olympics semi-finals, but she has the chance to bounce back and claim the Bronze Medal when she faces Anna Karolina Schmiedlova on Friday.
Swiatek is the overwhelming favourite to claim Bronze against Schmiedlova, who was 1-11 against top 10 players prior to this tournament.
Head To Head
This will be the first meeting between the pair.
Iga Swiatek Form
Swiatek was on an extraordinary 25-match winning streak in Paris, but was stunned in the semi-finals by Chinese star Zheng Qinwen, who she was previously 6-0 against in their H2H.
Despite leading 4-0 in the second set, Swiatek couldn't find her usual high level tennis and slumped to a 6-2 7-5 defeat.
It was only the eighth time that Swiatek has lost a match on clay since the 2020 season. The Pole is expected to bounce back in dominant fashion to secure the Bronze Medal here.
Anna Karolina Schmiedlova Form
One of the most random runs in Olympic history, but obviously short of Monica Puig going all the way to win Gold at Rio 2016.
Schmiedlova had only posted one win over a top 10 player in her career before this event, but the Slovakian was on fire to defeat the likes of Katie Boulter, Beatriz Haddad Maia and Jasmine Paolini, the reigning French Open and Wimbledon runner-up.
However, Schmiedlova couldn't keep her dream run going, suffering a heavy 6-4 6-0 defeat to Donna Vekic in the semi-finals.
Verdict
Unsurprisingly, Swiatek is the huge favourite at $1.02 and I've got no doubt she recovers swiftly from the disappointment of losing the semi-finals to make light work of Schmiedlova here.
At the end of the day, an Olympic medal is still up for grabs and Swiatek will want to reassert herself as the dominant player on clay. Backing the World No. 1 to cover a -7.5 games line and Swiatek has a decent chance of winning the opening set 6-0 - she did so twice on her way to the Roland Garros title a couple of months ago (vs Vondrousova & Potapova), while Schmiedlova is coming off a 6-0 set loss to Vekic and has run her race in Paris.
