Wests Tigers vs Cronulla Sharks Tips

The Sharks are tipped to extend their four-game win streak over the Tigers in this Saturday night prime-time clash.

Coming off the Rd 1 Bye, the Tigers were gallant in their defeat in the hands of the Raiders last week and showed some signs of improvement from last year. Unfortunately for them they still have a way to go before they are going to be able to match it with the likes of top 8 teams on a week to week basis.

Cronulla were once again less than convincing in their win over a hapless Bulldogs outfit. A poor start to the game saw the score locked 6-6 at the break with the Sharks unable to convert their chances. In the first half alone they had 31 tackles in the Bulldogs 20m zone coming up with only one try for their efforts.

We know from the previous two seasons that the Sharks are flat-track bullies who don’t mind giving the cellar dwellers a proper pounding. With their somewhat mediocre performance against the Dogs last week I am predicting them to snap into gear against the Tigers and hit 30 points taking the Team Total Over.

With there being so little video around the Tigers spine with Aiden Sezer I will back them to score a couple of tries against a mid-level Sharks D and push the Game Total Over the key number of 44.5.

  • The average Game Total of the last 6 matchups between these two clubs is 46 points with the two most recent games both totalling 48.
  • Cronulla have hit the 30pt mark in their last 4 games straight against the Tigers
  • Sione Katoa has scored 5 tries in his last two games against the Tigers, Wests allowed 41% of Opposition tries down their left side in 2023, the side where Katoa will be attacking
  • Round 3 is historically the highest scoring round across the first 5 games with 4 of the past 5 years all averaging between 41-52pts per game.

Head to Head

Things have not been easy for the Tigers for a long stretch of time and their games against the Sharks have been no different. In the last four games straight the Sharks have scored 30 or more points with a combined score over the period of 152-48.

The Tigers have at least been able to score a try or two which is good for our Totals bet coupled with the mediocre defence that Cronulla have shown so far this season allowing opponents an average of 1437 Run Metres.

Cronulla have been favoured in all six games dating back to the start of the 2019 season covering in all 5 of their wins. The Tigers last win against the Sharks came in 2020 with a 28-16 victory in which they covered as Underdogs.

Wests Tigers Form

Wests have a bright future, at least put against the backdrop of the past 5 or so years. They have a solid squad with the opportunity to keep building.

The experiment of Jayden Sullivan at half lasted about 40 minutes with Aidan Sezer brought on after half-time and now named to start this week.

The shining light though is Lachlan Galvin who despite his stature held his own last week attacking the line and keeping the defence guessing at every turn.

Look for the Tigers to continue to give him licence to attack with Sezer directing play around the park.

Wests Tigers Team News

Justin Olam is back in the lineup and will make his club debut against the Sharks. As noted Jayden Sullivan and Aidan Sezer have switched positions from between half-back and bench utility.

Alex Seyfarth and Fonua Pole have also switched places from the starting team and interchange.

Cronulla Sharks Form

The Sharks were less than impressive last week against the Dogs, especially in the first half. With 31 tackles inside the Canterbury 20m zone they managed to only score one try.

Their defence has also been mid-level so far this year for a team that has a defensive minded coach and at one time were known for being a staunch defensive outfit.

There are improvements to be made at the Sharks and the prediction is that some of them, especially on the attacking side will be made this week.

Verdict

The hot tip here is for Cronulla to go over their team total of 28.5 as they have done in 4 games straight against the Tigers.

With the recent defensive slump I can see the Tigers crossing for a couple of tries which will push us right up to the total. Goal Kicking could be the difference and I am going the Over based on Year on Year trends.

Sione Katoa’s tryscoring form against the Tigers can’t be denied so pencil him in for FTS and ATS
