Wests Tigers vs Cronulla Sharks Tips

The NRL must be shivering in their boots having this match-up as the Thursday night marquee game. The Tigers have been roasted in their past couple of outings and it doesn’t look like getting better any time soon.

It is difficult to find value in any of the numbers on the Cronulla side which essentially leaves us hoping for a Tigers upset or some solid player props to generate profit from this game.

  • Cronulla have won 8 of 9 games against bottom 8 opponents this year with an average winning margin of 24 points.
  • In Cronulla’s last 4 wins against Wests, the margin has been between 17 and 30 points.
  • Wests have lost their past 3 games following a loss of 40 points or more but have covered in 2 of them.
  • The Tigers have given up 13 tries to outside backs in their past 2 games.

Head to Head

Wests have had trouble getting past the Sharks in recent years. The head to head numbers show the Tigers have won only one game from the past five match-ups.

Three of the last five games have gone over the points total.

Well if we didn't think things could get any worse for the Tigers, they did. A 74-0 defeat against the Cowboys in Round 18 is now the record for the biggest scoreline in a game where a team scores no points in the NRL era.

The Tigers missed 54 tackles and completed only 18 sets in a game that was as one-sided as it could be.

Shining lights for the Tigers were Isaiah Papali’i and Shawn Blore who made 85 tackles combined.

Aitasi James is the replacement for the suspended try-scoring machine Alex Twal.

Asu Kepaoa and Tommy Talau join the backline as replacements for Brent Naden and David Nofoaluma.

Stefano Utoikamanu’s Origin career remains at one game and will line up for the Tigers this week.

Cronulla Sharks Form

The Sharks once again put a massive score on the board racking up 52 points against the unmotivated Dragons.

Taking their tally to 100 points scored over their past two games, Cronulla lead the league in points scored averaging 28.07 per game and 29.6 over their last five games.

Important to note is the fact that they have played the 2nd easiest schedule for opposing defences and the majority of their points have come against bottom 8 opponents.

Cronulla made 35 tackle breaks against the Dragons as well as keeping a clean sheet for set restarts, giving away only 4 penalties for the entire match.

Verdict

This is a tough situation as there are next to no numbers that are viable for the Sharks in terms of value. I am going to go the other way and hope that the Sharks' recent trend as flat track bullies takes a little break and that the Tigers can muster some sort of miracle to at least keep the game within 3 converted tries. Barring that if the Sharks are to win, Will Kennedy is almost a certainty to score.
