Sydney Roosters vs Melbourne Storm, Round 7 2024 - Expert Prediction

The Melbourne Storm will continue their reign over the Sydney Roosters despite the return of James Tedesco and Sam Walker to the Easts lineup.

Both teams are coming off a two-point win in round 6 with the Storm surviving against the Bulldogs, while the Roosters won as the 4.5-point underdogs against the Knights. The Roosters now start this game as slight favourites in a lot of books due to the return of James Tedesco, but I’m not sure I feel the same way.

With the return of the Australian and Blues captain to the Sydney side this directly affects the involvement of Joey Manu, who was sensational against the Knights at the back. Trent Robinson will need to find a way to get his star-studded centre more early ball or have him play a roaming role where he can attack both sides of the field.

I don’t see Manu getting the freedom this week against the Storm and it is why I will be taking Melbourne to win and continue their current dominance over the Roosters in Sydney. This game is going to be a real gritty contest just as it was in the finals last season. I don’t expect there to be a lot of scoring which will see this game go Under the low total of 39.5 points. I am even going to throw a unit on the draw, with all of models pointing to golden-point.

These big contests scream for big-time players to step up and the Thursday night lights will shine bright on Cam Munster and he will cross for a try.

  • The Roosters have not beaten Melbourne in Sydney since 2019.
  • Melbourne have a 20-6 record on Thursday Night Footy, winning the last 5 games.
  • 6 of the past 8 games between Melbourne and Sydney have gone Under the Game Total.
  • The Roosters have given up 4 tries in their past 2 games to opposing halves.

Head to Head

Melbourne beat Sydney on all three occasions in 2023, capped off with a last-minute try by Will Warbrick which ended the Roosters season in week 2 of the finals with Melbourne getting up 18-13.

Sydney have had no real answer for Melbourne in recent years with theStorm holding a commanding head-to-head record winning eight of the past nine matches since the 2020 season.

The Roosters are coming off a big win against the Newcastle Knights with Joey Manu stealing the show with a NRL record of 370 Run Metres in the game, with the Kiwi international filling in for captain James Tedesco at fullback. The Roosters got a 22-20 win over Newcastle while also missing Sam Walker with both the halfback and fullback out with concussion.

The question is being raised at Bondi as to who is the best fullback at the club and/or how to get Joey Manu more involved and not being wasted in the centres.

Sydney Roosters Team News

James Tedesco returns at fullback for the Roosters, however, Sam Walker remains in the reserves apparently not being totally clear from his concussion he suffered in the Roosters loss to the Bulldogs.

Joey Manu has moved back to the centres with Fetalaiga Pauga moving out of the side. Luke Keary will remain at halfback and Connor Watson at five-eight.

Egan Butcher comes in for Sitili Tupouniua who suffered a concussion last week.

The Melbourne Storm escaped with a 16-14 victory over Canterbury with the Bulldogs Josh Addo-Carr and Viliami Kikau running riot against the pairing of Will Warbrick and Nick Meaney on Melbourne’s right side. Melbourne did what Melbourne does at AAMI Park and found a way to cross the line with just 6 minutes left to play ending the hopes of a famous victory for Canterbury.

The Storm have definitely not looked as sharp as they could to start this season, despite their 4-1 record, however, Cameron Munster played in just his second game of the season and looked to be returning to his best with the Storm five-eight involved heavily in the match and looked dangerous with every touch.

Melbourne Storm Team News

Nelson Asofa-Solomona makes his first appearance for the Storm this season with Tui Kamikamica missing with a calf injury.

Joe chan comes back onto the interchange bench.

Verdict

The return of Joey Manu to the centres will have an adverse effect for the Roosters with the Storm getting up on Thursday night.

This game is going to be a grind so despite the game total sitting at 39.5, expect the Under to hit.

Cam Munster loves these big contests so expect him to shine by running at the line and crossing for a try.
