New South Wales vs Queensland Tips

NSW Blues have already regained the Origin shield, but don't expect them to take their foot off the gas.

The Blues are tipped to win by 13+ again and cover a handicap of -19.5. There is also value on keeping the Queensland Maroons scoreless again.

  • Queensland Maroons hold a 63-56 head to head advantage over New South Wales.
  • New South Wales won Game 1 50-6 in Townsville, the second-biggest winning margin in Origin history.
  • New South Wales won Game 2 26-0 in Brisbane.
  • New South Wales have outscored Queensland Maroons 76-6 in this year's series.
  • New South Wales are bidding for their first State of Origin clean sweep since 2000.
  • Queensland have failed to score a single point in the last 3 halves.

Head to Head

The Maroons boast a narrow lead over the Blues in head-to-head matches, winning 63 of 121 games with two draws.

Last year's series went down to the wire with Queensland winning 2-1 after a 20-14 victory in Game 3.

But New South Wales made amends this year with two dominant wins to regain the Origin shield. They won Game 1 50-6 in Townsville before recording a 26-0 win in Game 2 in Brisbane.

New South Wales Form

The Blues have been ultra-impressive in the 2021, firmly putting the disappointment of losing last year's decider behind them.

Brad Fittler's side recorded their biggest ever Origin victory in Game 1 with a 50-6 demolition of the Maroons in Townsville.

That eight-try performance was followed by a 26-0 victory in Brisbane in Game 2 to seal the series and set up a potential whitewash despite having played all three games in Queensland.

New South Wales Team News

The Blues are without halves Nathan Cleary and Jarome Luai due to shoulder and knee injuries respectively.

Brad Fittler has opted for Parramatta Eels' Mitch Moses, who makes his Origin debut, and Canberra Raiders' Jack Wighton as their replacements.

Prop Daniel Saifiti has been ruled out late due to a rib injury, so Dale Finucane comes into the run-on side.

Api Koroisau comes onto the interchange in place of Wighton.

Stefano Utoikamanu, Clint Gutherson and Nicho Hynes have been added to the extended squad.

Queensland Form

Queensland have been completely outplayed in the opening two games of the series to lose the Origin shield won in 2000.

Paul Green has had a tough start to life in charge of the Maroons, who were played off the park in Game 1 in a 50-6 defeat in Townsville.

Despite having home advantage again in Brisbane in Game 2, Queensland failed to register a single point as they lost 26-0 at Suncorp Stadium in another one-sided game.

The Maroons have now gone three halves of footy without scoring a single point, and have managed one try in the 2021 series.

Queensland Team News

Jai Arrow is suspended due to breaching biosecurity protocols in the Maroons camp, forcing a late change for Queensland.

As a result, Paul Green has called in Tino Fa'asuamaleaui to the starting side. Thomas Flegler has been added to the bench.

David Fifita is also ruled out through suspension. Francis Molo takes his place on the bench.

Green's tactical changes sees Kalyn Ponga return at full-back with Valentine Holmes moving to the wing.

There is also a debut for Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow at centre as the Maroons look to add some attacking threats. Kurt Capewell moves from centre to the back row.

Ben Hunt comes into the starting line-up in place of Andrew McCullough, who is left out altogether.

AJ Brimson is fit again and handed a role on the interchange, while Coen Hess has been a late addition to the squad.
