Game 2 of the 2023 State of Origin series heads to Suncorp with the Queensland Maroons leading 1-0, beating the Blues 28-10 as the underdog.
Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow snuck under the radar for most, scoring the first try of the 2023 series pouncing on a Cameron Munster grubber through the line.
We have dived into the record books as far back as 2017, when the last current player scored the first try in an Origin game to give our best tips for the first try scorer.
- In the 19 games played in the last 7 years, QLD has scored the first try in 10 games to NSW’s 9 first try scorers.
- A winger from either team has scored the first try in game 2 in 4 of the last 6 matches, however not in the last 2 games.
- QLD have scored the first try in game 2 in 4 of the previous 6 years.
- In the last 10 years, only Valentine Holmes has been the first try scorer in 2 games of the same series. The Queenslander did it twice in 2017 and 2018, both times in game 2 & 3.

Valentine Holmes
I'm definitely hung up on Valentine Holmes' track record as a first try scorer for QLD and I will be backing him all series long.
He found some try scoring form against Melbourne in his last NRL game, scoring a try while looking dangerous all game with 2 try assists and 3 linebreaks.
The miraculous statistic is that 6 of Holmes 11 Origin tries have been the games first. His latest as first try scorer was in game 3, 2022, crossing in the 12th minute.
Holmes has been the first try scorer in at least 1 game of 4 of the 5 State of Origin series he has been involved in previous to 2023.
Tom Trbojevic
Tommy Turbo comes into this game with a lot of pressure on him after an under-par performance in game 1 of the series.
If NSW are going to win the game Turbo is going to have to shake off his injuries and be the game changer for the Blues, especially now that Latrell Mitchell has been ruled out.
Tom Trbojevic has scored 5 tries in his last 2 games for the Manly Sea Eagles and will need to find that type of try scoring form for NSW this Week.
Turbo was the first try scorer in game 2 of the 2019 series, scoring in the 7th minute, giving the Blues the start they needed to kick-on and win the game 38-6
Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow
The Hammer took the crown of First Try Scorer in game 1, which none of us so-called “experts” picked in our top 3.
I’m not going to make that mistake again and play the Dolphin fullback like a roulette table and ride him until he loses.
The Queensland centre scored 2 tries in game 1, both assisted by Cameron Munster, which will be a combination that QLD coach Billy Slater will look to exploit again in game 2.
The Hammer has also scored 12 tries in 12 appearances for the Dolphins this season, including 2 tries against Manly in a well-beaten side.
Verdict
Centres and wingers dominate the first try scoring statistics so I am jumping on one of the 3 of the 4 centres to bankroll me for Origin 2.
