In this article we pick out our favourite First Tryscorer tips and where you can find the best value across all bookies in Australia.

We have dived into the record books as far back as 2017, when the last current player scored the first try in an Origin game to give our best tips for the first try scorer.

  • In the 22 games played in the last 7 years, QLD have scored first on 13 occasions with NSW having scored first 9 times.
  • The centres (8) and wingers (7) have naturally dominated the first try scoring category, second-rowers have scored on 3 occasions with no other position scoring first more than once.
  • Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow has scored 7 tries across his 4 Origin appearances.
  • Angus Crichton has scored 7 tries in 11 games for the Roosters this season.

Based on these trends and their current try scoring form here are our top 3 picks for the first try scorer in State of Origin Game 2.

Latrell Mitchell

Say what you want about Mitchell, he is a big game player and a barnstorming runner. He has shrugged off his detractors to once again feature at Origin level and there is no doubt his recent form for the Rabbitohs makes him deserving of the spot.

Latrell has scored 6 tries in his 8 Origin appearances and will be hungry to once again prove he is a dominant player at the representative level. If NSW are to be any chance of winning they will need to build an early lead which plays right into the hands of Latrell crossing for a try.

Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow

The Hammer has had one of the most successful starts to an Origin career of any footballer having crossed for 7 tries across his 4 appearances including his 3 try bonanza in Game 1.

Tries will most likely not come as easy for the Maroons in Game 2 as they did against 12 men in Game 1. But with Hamiso’s speed and penchant for backing up through the middle there is every chance that a tackle bust or linebreak leads to a situation where he gets to taste in the spoils finishing the job over the line.

Angus Crichton

Crichton has been in scintillating form for his NRL club the Sydney Roosters having scored 7 tries across 11 appearances so far this season. Not only is Angus a distinguished ball runner, able to hit gaps at speed while also changing direction, the backrower has a knack for chasing attacking kicks and scoring tries off broken play close to the line.

With Game 2 predicted to be more of an arm-wrestle than what Game 1 proved to be there is every chance that it comes down to a kick, ricochet or dropped ball which eventuates into a Crichton try out on the edge.

Verdict

Centres and wingers dominate the first try scoring statistics and Latrell Mitchell and Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow are as about as dynamic as you can get. Crichton is the best value with him being in exceptional tryscoring form at NRL level.
