In this article we pick out our favourite First Tryscorer tips and where you can find the best value across all bookies in Australia.
We have dived into the record books as far back as 2017, when the last current player scored the first try in an Origin game to give our best tips for the first try scorer.
- In the 21 games played in the last 7 years, QLD have scored first on 12 occasions with NSW having scored first 9 times.
- The centres (8) and wingers (7) have naturally dominated the first try scoring category, second-rowers have scored on 3 occasions with no other position scoring first more than once.
- NSW have scored the first try in game 1 in 6 of the previous 7 years.
- Jeremiah Nanai is 2nd in the NRL in tries this year with 10 from 12 games.
Based on these trends and their current try scoring form here are our top 3 picks for the first try scorer in State of Origin Game 1.
Valentine Holmes
Valentine Holmes came up good for us in Game 2 last year and we love going back to the well. The Cowboys and Queensland centre certainly has no problem getting over the line in Origin, scoring 13 tries in 16 games.
The miraculous statistic is that almost half of his tries have been the games first, opening the try scoring in 7 of his 16 games. His latest as first try scorer was in game 2, 2023, crossing in the 8th minute.
Holmes has been the first try scorer in at least 1 game of 5 of the 6 State of Origin series he has been involved in.
Zac Lomax
Zac Lomax had some trouble with form early in the season but once his contract saga was sorted we saw a completely new man. Playing on the wing for the St George Illawarra Dragons has unleashed a new potential for the young speedster who has made some amazing individual plays this year to contort his body over the tryline to score.
Lomax is also a player that rises to the occasion so expect him to be in the thick of things when the game gets going. He has scored 7 tries in 11 games this year and is playing outside of halves and centres that have amazing stats for try-assists to their wingers.
If NSW score first there is a big chance it is off the back of a sweeping backline play with Lomax as the finisher.
Jeremiah Nanai
Jeremiah Nanai is 2nd(!) in the league for tries this season having scored 10 in his 12 games played. He is an unstoppable force close to the line with hole running skills any footy player could only dream of.
The big back-rower could be matching up against a centre-wing pairing in Suaalii and Lomax who have never played together and are not especially known for their defensive ability.
If there is anyone across the board between both teams who is an outside chance to cross first it is Jeremiah Nanai with QLD known to build pressure in the opposition 20m just waiting for the Blues to make a judgement error.
Verdict
Centres and wingers dominate the first try scoring statistics and Val Holmes and Zac Lomax are as dynamic as you can get. Nanai is the best value big man with his exceptional try scoring form for the Cowboys this year.
