2024 State of Origin New South Wales vs Queensland Preview

The 2024 State of Origin is upon us and the anticipation is at an all time high with many questions surrounding the series, mostly around the Blues camp and how they will go under new head coach Michael Maguire.

After the term of former NSW great Brad Fittler, New South Wales decided to appoint a more traditional, longstanding coach to overcome the recent dominance of Queensland that has seen the Maroons win the previous two series and three of the past four.

Maguire has wasted no time making an impression, wreaking an overhaul on the Blues squad and naming 6 debutants in his NSW Game One team list and dumping long-standing captain James Tedesco from his squad completely.

Things are much more stable in the Queensland camp with Billy Slater, who has won his opening two series with the Maroons, avoiding too many unforced changes within his squad from the list that won in 2023.

Slater has had to make a shuffle with frontrow pairing Tino Fa'asuamaleaui and Tom Flegler both out for the season with injury. Lindsay Collins and 2023 Wally Lewis medalist Reuben Cotter will start at prop. The only real shock was the absence of Titan David Fifita from the squad with Slater opting to go for debutant J’maine Hopgood and carry Selwyn Cobbo also on the bench.

2024 State of Origin Prediction

It is a new era in the Blues camp and the importance of victory could shape the future and success for NSW, who need to look to develop under new coach Michael Maguire.

The way I see it is that the Blues will learn a lesson in this series and go down to Queensland 3-0 for the first time since 2010, paying $4.80 at EliteBet. It will be important that NSW do not hit the panic button and focus on developing their whole squad for the future and build a team and culture around their jersey instead of chopping and changing as they have done over the past few years.

Billy Slater will get the most out of his men and they will find the weaker links in the chain of the Blues defensive line and we will see the team’s experience come forward in the dying moments when the games are on the line, as usual for the Maroons.

Queensland will win the series 3-0.
