St George Illawarra Dragons vs New Zealand Warriors Tips

St George are a club in turmoil. After the drama surrounding their coaching ranks, star half Ben Hunt has asked for a release from the club which the Dragons have since declined.

This will surely affect their on-field focus this weekend against a club which has shown the whole NRL this year they are only focused on what is in front of them. I am tipping the Warriors to put the Dragons away extending their win and cover streak.

  • The Warriors average winning margin in 2023 is 11.25 points
  • New Zealand are league-leading 11-3 ATS this year with a record of 6-1 as the away team.
  • The Dragons are 1-5 against teams currently in the top 8
  • Shaun Johnson has scored 30 points individually over the past 2 games (3 tries, 9 goals)

Head to Head

The Dragons and Warriors have met six times since the beginning of 2019 with the wins being split 3-3.

St George have the form going into this weekend winning the last three games against New Zealand, all being played in Australia.

The last matchup between these two teams played at WIN Stadium was in 2018 and finished with a Warriors win 18-12, but only two players from each team remain in the playing squads from that game.

St George Illawarra Dragons Form

The Dragons enjoyed a week off in round 16 having their second bye of the season after starting the year with a round 1 bye.

Previous to that the Dragons beat the Rabbitohs 36-30 in round 15, taking their fourth win of the season.

In round 14 St George challenged the Panthers eventually going down 26-18 after having the scores locked up at 12-all at half-time.

St George Illawarra Dragons Team News

Ben Hunt has been named to back up from Origin with only two days rest, despite news coming out of him wanting a release from the Dragons.

Both Jack Bird and Jack de Belin have been named after overcoming separate injuries.

New Zealand Warriors Form

New Zealand had their second bye in five weeks in round 16 allowing another important rest period before their third and final bye in round 22.

The Warriors won two of three games since their first bye scoring at least 30 points in both of their wins against the Dolphins and Raiders.

New Zealand won the run metres battle in both games, asserting dominance through the middle of the field.

Verdict

The Dragons are in all sorts and I think they will find it difficult to get up this week with news circling of Ben Hunt wanting out of the club. New Zealand are fresh and in prime form to put this game away.

Shaun Johnson has been outstanding in his last two games and I am backing him in to score 10 or more points in the game.
