St George Illawarra Dragons vs Melbourne Storm Tips

St George will host Melbourne for the first time at WIN Stadium since 2019 on Saturday night. Melbourne put in what could be their season’s best performance against the Raiders last week, while the Dragons are coming off another close defeat in 2023 to the Rabbitohs.

The bookies have been giving punters the chance to take advantage of huge handicaps for the Dragons over the last couple of weeks which is why I believe the Storm have now been given too much breathing room at 14.5 points as favourites.

Melbourne have been good for a halftime-fulltime double this season generally kicking on when they have the chance to put a team to the sword. Nick Meaney has a solid record against the Dragons and with my expectation that Melbourne will put on points against the Dragons, you can count the fullback in for a try.

  • The Storm have covered the line in their last 2 matches against the Dragons when the handicap has been by more than 14.5 points to Melbourne
  • Melbourne have covered the line in 3 of 4 games in 2023 when started as the favourite by 10 points or more.
  • Melbourne have won both halves in 47% of their matches.
  • Nick Meaney has scored a try in 4 of his last 5 against St George

Head to Head

St George and Melbourne have played each other just once each year the past four years with the Storm leading the head-to-head record 3-1.

The last two victories were by the Storm winning both games by a minimum of 26 points.

St George Illawarra Dragons Form

St George lost another game by under 12 points when they were beaten by the South Sydney Rabbitohs 26-14 at Barlow Park.

It was the Dragons’ ninth defeat 1-12 and their third in succession in another game where they held themselves in striking distance of their opponents but couldn't take their chances when it counted.

Melbourne Storm Form

Just as we once again started to count Melbourne out as a real premiership contender they put in a performance that makes you second-guess your existence as a punter and sports fan.

The Storm electrified the Raiders in Melbourne winning 48-2, keeping the Raiders tryless for the first time in 252 games.

The Storm made 10 Linebreaks to 0 and ran for 700 more metres than the Raiders, so the scoreline is no real surprise.

Melbourne Storm Team News

Craig Bellamy has stuck with the same 17 which smashed the Raiders last week.

Cameron Munster is on stand-by for the birth of his second child and could be a late scratch with Jonah Pezet to replace the five-eight if need be.

Verdict

Melbourne can have another statement performance this week at the expense of the lowly Dragons, beating the 14.5 point line as favourites. They can get a lead early and will kick on into the night winning both halves of football. Nick Meaney can take his try scoring tally five from his last six against St George.
