St George Dragons vs South Sydney Rabbitohs, Round 10 2024 - Expert Prediction

Souths’ season goes from bad to worse and they suffered even more injury in their big loss to the Panthers last week. The Saints have been competing well against their Sydney rivals in recent years and will enjoy getting another victory while covering the 5.5 points as favourites.

The Dragons are due for another better performance and will pounce on the wounded Rabbits this week who have untested combinations all over the park. Ben Hunt will be looking for the weaknesses and will find his star winger Zac Lomax who will cross for at least one try in this game.

I have this match hitting the under on the 46.5-point Game Total as I just don’t see the Dragon’s running up the score and do not see the Rabbitohs getting enough territory to add to much to the total.

  • The Dragons have won 2 of the past 3 matches against South Sydney.
  • The Rabbitohs concede an average of 36.5 points per game.
  • The Rabbitohs concede an average of 6.8 linebreaks a game, second-worst in the league.
  • Souths concede 45% of their tries on the left side of the field.

Head to Head

Both Souths and St George got a win last year in their head to head battle. The Dragons got up in round 15 30-36 at Kogarah, with South getting their win in Cairns 26-14.

The Dragons have won 2 of the past 3 matches against Souths, however, the Bunnies have a clear 7-2 lead since 2019.

The Dragons have been playing much better footy in 2024 than they did last season, however, they have dropped off the pace a little with two consecutive losses.

St George had the game in their hands 10-6 at halftime against Cronulla last week but were superiorly owned by Nicho Hynes and the Sharks in the second half, maintaining just 30% of the Territory, resulting in a 20-10 loss.

Consistency is what coach Shane Flanagan will be chasing from his players this week as they need to settle the ship and put in another good performance before this season runs away from them again.

Souths took another heavy defeat in more ways than one last weekend against the Panthers, going down on the scoreboard 42-12, after a better start to the match. Things went South quickly though with Penrith running in 7 unanswered tries after the Rabbits scored the first two while Izak Tago was in the bin.

Cam Murray struggled through the match with a hip flexor injury and replacement fullback Jye Gray left the match with syndesmosis.

The new injury concerns adds to a long existing list that adds to the worries of interim head coach Ben Hornby, who was appointed last week to help dig South Sydney out of their own rabbit hole that has them at the bottom of the ladder in 2024.

South Sydney Rabbitohs Team News

Where to start…… The positive, Latrell Mitchell returns from his three week suspension and will take his place at fullback.

Cam Murray, Isaiah Tass and Jye Gray will miss extended periods with injuries they picked up last weekend.

Gehamat Shibasaki has been called up to play on the wing with Michael Chee Kam staying in the centres. Dion Teaupa will play his first game in the NRL as the replacement for Dean Hawkins. Saliva Havili will start at lock for Cam Murray.

Tallis Duncan will join debutant Matt French on the interchange bench.
