South Sydney Rabbitohs vs North Queensland Cowboys Tips

Everything points to another South Sydney victory against North Queensland, besides the poor recent form of the Bunnies. However, they are expected to get some key personnel back this week, although Latrell Mitchell is still missing.

The Cowboys have been awful away from home in 2023, so I like the Bunnies as favourites by 6.5 points. Both teams have been leaking points recently so I am tipping the over too. Alex Johnston has scored nine tries in his last six games and is up against a weaker right side defence of the Cowboys.

  • Souths have won 7 of their last 10 against the Cowboys, including three 1 point victories.
  • 4 of the last 5 Souths wins against the Cowboys have been by a margin of 7 or more points.
  • The Cowboys have won just 1 of their 7 away games this season. 5 of those losses have been by a margin of 8 or more.
  • The last 4 Rabbitohs matches have gone OVER the game total, while 4 of the last 6 Cowboys games have also hit the OVER.
  • Alex Johnston has scored at least 2 tries in 4 of his last 6 games.

Head to Head

Since 2017, the Rabbitohs haven’t lost to the Cowboys, beating them by more than a converted try in four of their seven victories.

The Rabbits and the Cows most recently met in Round 24, 2022, with Souths getting the chocolates 20-10, at Accor Stadium.

South Sydney Rabbitohs Form

After winning six in a row, the Rabbitohs have now lost three of their last four games, with the Origin period not being kind to the men from Redfern.

They have been suffering with fatigue and injuries which has affected their defence dramatically. In their last four games Souths have conceded an average of 31 points, which is a drastic difference from their first 11 rounds where they did not concede more than 20 points in a single match.

South Sydney Rabbitohs Team News

Cameron Murray and Damien Cook have been named and are expected to back up for the Bunnies after Origin 2.

The injury situation for the Bunnies brings a mix of news. Unfortunately, Latrell Mitchell continues to be sidelined, but there is good news as Cody Walker makes his return from a quad strain.

In terms of the forward lineup, Tom Burgess and Davvy Moale are expected to make their comebacks from their respective injury concerns, bolstering the bench.

Jacob Host moves down to the reserves, while Jed Cartwright is slated to start in the backrow. Shaq Mitchell, on the other hand, is completely omitted from the lineup.

North Queensland Cowboys Form

The Cowboys have found some form of late, taking advantage of their games under the Origin period, beating both the Melbourne Storm and the Penrith Panthers in the last 2 outings.

The Northerners have won 4 of their last 6 matches which puts them up into 13th spot, just one win out of the top 8 with 16 competition points.

Their good form has been on their turnaround in attack more than their defence. The Cowboys have averaged 28 points for in their last 6 games which is more than the top league average of 26.4 of the Sharks.

North Queensland Cowboys Team News

Todd Payten has made the decision to include all five of his Origin players in the reserves, leaving uncertainty about the number of players to be rested and those who will provide backup.

Heilum Luki has sustained a facial fracture and will be out for an extended period.

Kulikefu Finefeuiaki has been selected to start, while Jack Gosiewski has been added to the bench.

Verdict

The Cowboys are yet to prove that they can consistently win away from home and I don't see them getting away with a victory against Souths who will be looking to hit some form against a side that they have dominated in recent years.

Plenty of points will be scored, hitting the over and pushing South’s winning margin over 6.5 points. Alex Johnston for a double, because if he gets one….he gets two!
