South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Newcastle Knights, Round 25 2024 - Expert Prediction

Newcastle are still a fighting chance for a finals spot and will stay alive for another week with a win over the wounded Rabbits, covering the line as the favourite.

The Knights are holding onto hope while the Bunnies are hopeless in every sense of the word, slipping further into their hole at the bottom end of the table losing to Wests and Cody Walker suffering concussion and will miss this game.

Both of these teams have been struggling in attack but the Knights will do enough to get past the Bunnies and win by more than a converted try, but don’t expect them to run up a score and push the total to the over.

Greg Marzhew has been finding his tryscoring form again and put three on South in their match last season.

  • Newcastle has covered the line in their past 3 matches.
  • The past 4 South Sydney matches have gone under the game total
  • 2 of the past 3 matches between Souths and Newcastle has gone under the game total.
  • Greg Marzhew has scored 5 tries in his past 7 games.

Head to Head

The Knights didn’t waste a 12-nil half time lead in round 25 last season, going on with the job 29-10 last time they met the Rabbitohs.

It was the Knights first win in 4 matches against Souths which now has the head to head record locked at 3-3 since 2019.

It’s harsh to say but the Rabbits dropped to a new low, going down to Wests 18-16 on Saturday night, unable to take advantage of the 55% of the territory and the 43 tackles they had inside the Wests’ 20m.

It was another match where the Souths’ attack failed to fire, averaging just 12.5 points per game in their past 4 matches and to make matters worse, they will be without Cody Walker this week.

The Bunnies season is well and truly a lost cause as they await the return of the master coach Wayne Bennett next year there is not much really to play for.

South Sydney Rabbitohs Team News

Cody Walker suffered concussion and will miss the match under concussion protocols. Dean Hawkins comes into the halves to partner Jack Wighton.

Richie Kennar is expected to be banned for his high shot last week which opens the door back up for young flyer Tyrone Munro.

The Knights finals aspiration took a hard blow, losing in golden point to the Cronulla Sharks 18-19 and are now in the three team clump 2 wins outside of the eight with 3 games left to play. Newcastle have a favourable draw playing two teams below them on the ladder and then the Dolphins in the final round that could determine their fate if the Dragons slip up in eight.

Newcastle do only have themselves to blame with their attack failing to fire really over the past 6 matches averaging just 17 points per game during that span.

The Knights have also been soft through the middle of the park and allow their opponents the second most run metres (1522m) per game of any team in the NRL which often has them playing footy in their own half.

Newcastle Knights Team News

Tyson Gamble will miss the match with a fracture in his hand and is replaced by Jack Cogger.

Dylan Lucas has been named to replace Kyle McCarthy in the centres. Will Pryce also comes onto the bench as the utility.
