South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Melbourne Storm, Round 23 2024 - Expert Prediction

Melbourne stumbled on their way to the minor premiership last week, but expect them to dust themselves off with a big win over South Sydney, whose finals hopes have all but diminished.

The Storm’s shock-loss to St George last week will be just what they needed to fire this week against the Bunnies, who they have had the upper hand over in the past 5 years.

The line is a big one at 16.5 points in favour of the Storm but with the Rabbitohs season over and the Melbourne Storm hanging onto a slim 2-point lead at the top of the ladder, expect Craig Bellamy’s men to come out hard this week after what would have been a torrential spray from their coach after their round 22 performance.

Don’t expect the Bunnies to contribute too much to the scoreboard and for the Storm to put their foot down, covering the line but the game total to stay under 50 points.

  • Melbourne have covered the line in 7 of their past 10 games against South Sydney
  • 4 of the past 5 matches between Melbourne and South Sydney have gone under the game total.
  • 4 of the past 5 Melbourne Storm games have gone under the game total.
  • Grant Anderson has scored 5 tries in his past 4 games for Melbourne.

Head to Head

Melbourne did a number on Souths on Anzac Day this year beating the Bunnies by 34 points as runaway 54-20 victors.

The win was the Storm’s eight in their past 10 games against the Rabbitohs since the 2019 season.

Mathematically the Rabbits are still a chance for finals but after the past two rounds which eventuated in two more losses it is time to put a fork in them for the 2024 season.

Their 1-9 start to the season was always going to be difficult to overcome, despite giving their fans a little hope midway through the season with a 5-0 run. Latrell being missing for long stretches hurt the team that is lacking real leadership and they will now be counting down the days for supercoach Wayne Bennet to take over the reigns.

The Bunnies most recent 20-6 loss to the Sharks in round 22 has them 3 wins and a point differential out of the eight and with their poor defence for most part of the season that has cost them dearly they are not squeezing in even if they go on a 5-0 run to end the year.

A hiccup on the Melbourne Storm’s run to the minor premiership last week, going down to the St George Dragons for the first time in Melbourne in the 2000s 18-16 ends their seven game winning streak and cuts their lead at the top of the NRL table in half, now just two points ahead of the reigning premiers the Penrith Panthers.

Melbourne ticked all the statistical boxes in their match against the Dragons, winning the territory with 63%, having 206 more run meters and 2 more linebreaks and 10 more tackles than their opponents inside their attacking 20m, however an extra conversion by Zac Lomax was the difference.

The Storm failed to take their chances and take advantage of the better field position and the Dragons stole a shocker that could come to haunt the Storm on their quest for a sixth minor premiership.

Melbourne Storm Team News

Tui Kamikamica comes back into the front row after being a late withdrawal last week. Nelson Asofa-Solomona goes back into lock. Trent Loero comes into the second row with Eli Katoa out with a knee injury.
